Note: Many of the links are to the Amity Arena Library, a website devoted to the game which includes tracking the history of it through patchnotes and a running history of what cards entered and left the meta. Their website was a valuable resource for this post.
Mobile gaming has taken off like a wildfire since the advent of the smartphone boosted the average processing power a phone could carry. Initially it took the form of crossing over older, more easily runnable games onto the mobile market to... mixed success, but in recent years we've seen both the West and East use mobile gaming to replace the old fashioned movie tie in game. It's easily accessable, has a much wider reach than consoles or PC, you can take it on the go and standards are inherently lower for mobile games than they are a full 60 dollar game. Since the 2010s, mobile gaming has shifted to what's called the "Freemium" module. The game itself is free to download and start playing, but is insideously designed with obnoxious paywalls or artificial limiters put in place to limit how much you can play each day. If the game is part of a pre-existing franchise, additional money can be made through a premium currency or a chance to obtain high-powered units by rolling a slot machine random chance mechanic. And thus, gacha gaming was born. This sub has had several threads in the past on high profile gacha games, such as the monolithic Fate Grand/Order, Pokemon Go or Genshin Impact. One of the more popular things to roll for in gachas as a consequence is wallpapers for your homescreen, especially for high-grade units as they're usually animated to move a little bit on the homescreen. Today we're looking a low to mid-tier gacha game that rose and fell with the advent of one catgirl. Let's talk RWBY. RWBY is an online web anime made by Rooster Teeth focusing on four prospective monster hunters who get embroiled in a world-spanning shadow war. It's of debatable quality in matters of animation, combat, voice acting, story, worldbuilding, romance, and it's kind of a little racist if I'm being honest, but one of the major positives of RWBY is that the series tends to have good character design. Series creator Monty Oum set in the guidelines for the show while making it that most if not every design should be made to be cosplay friendly, hence why most of the outfits have things most costume designers haven't heard of like... pockets. And Rooster Teeth, above all else, likes making money. So they know people like RWBY's character designs, enough so that in 2017 plans were made to release a gacha game themed around RWBY called Amity Arena, which would be developed by Korean company NHN Entertainment. Amity Arena is a PvP tower defense game. Each player controls two turrets and a tower and has three minutes to use units themed from the show to destroy the other player's structures. Whoever took out more wins, destroying a tower is an instant victory. When the game launched, it had three tiers for units- Common (generally held for mooks or low-tier characters in the show), Rare (roughly protagonist-level or elite mooks go here) and Epic (High tier characters usually with an active ability that did lots of damage or stopped enemies in their tracks). The game launched in October 2018 to generally positive reviews from both mobile game players and RWBY fans alike. Fans were happy to get a lot of new official art for the characters in the game and the base gameplay loop was fun. Criticism at the time was largely themed around the lack of content besides PVP matches and some issues with the meta but overall, the launch went well. Each month, the developers would add new units, including popular characters like Neopolitian, Cinder Fall, Zwei the dog, and more. But everything changed with February 20th 2019, which introduced Neon Katt, the titular catgirl (RWBY characters are themed around fairytales, except for Neon, who is themed around Nyan Cat, and her partner Flynt Coal, who is themed off a potentially racist joke made by Rooster Teeth). Neon is a character from RWBY Volume 3 who's part of a team that RWBY face during a tournament arc. Her partner, Flynt Coal, was part of the game at launch, and Neon would join him a few months later. Neon in the show is a cocky fighter who taunts the heroes and zips around on rollarskates, which in-game is represented by Neon skating towards the nearest enemy structure to her and hitting it, while all units within a radius of Neon are taunted and provoked into attacking her above all other targets unless they-selves are coded to hit structures. On its own, not a bad idea for a unit, but Neon came with four big caveats:
Neon was the fourth corner of the square that became known as the Artillery Arena meta, which saw Neon, Cinder (who had an AOE ability she could use which was wide enough to hit a turret and tower and single-handedly killed the entire launch meta of using fragile swarm units), Zwei (an on-summon high damage AOE on any part of the map) and Penny (another AOE ability that instead did chip damage and locked a location down) turn the game's meta into a chip game. Every player ran at least one of the above cards, if only to counter the others. Neon was the universal counter in being anti-swarm and the hardest to stop, especially at launch where her taunt range was so large, it could grab units from the other lane.
Neon launched with a unit weight of "Heavy", which meant that if she was behind a unit she could push it on her way to the turret. This launched a sub-meta where Neon was placed behind a larger unit such as the Ursa (which like Neon was a unit that focused on structures but was made slow to cover its tankiness), to push them towards the turret faster. This was called Disco Bear. They eventually patched this so Neon phased through units by making her a lightweight.
Neon couldn't die. She was invincible until she hit a structure, which combined with her taunt meant that Neon was very annoying to fight and could lock down an entire lane of the battlefield by being placed well and taunting enemies to let you prepare a counter.
Neon was a very cheap unit to summon. Amity Arena uses a mechanic called "Aura" where all units cost a certain amount and it recharges over the match- for instance, protagonist Ruby Rose has a Rare card that costs four Aura to summon, while Weiss Schnee has two rares that cost three and five. Neo only cost two Aura, which made her one of the cheapest units of the game and thus disproportionately powerful for her cost and easy to cycle through your deck so you could spam her.
From the word go, Neon is an unpopular unit; she's clearly overbalanced and elements such as the Disco Bear glitch have players thinking she'll have to get knocked down in a nerf- she'll either be made slower, more expensive, or able to die pre-hitting a structure, right? Neon doesn't show up in the next patch. Instead, before she's fixed, an entire new class of units called Legendaries are introduced, and this is where the game goes full gacha. Legendaries were meant to represent the highest tier characters in the game, the ones who were either the most popular characters or the highest-tier fighters in the show. Or in some cases, the popular ships such as combo cards for White Rose (Ruby/Weiss), Bumblebee (Blake/Yang) and Flower Power (Ren/Nora). Legendaries, representing their value, were impossibly rare and had an infinitely small chance of actually appearing (The most reliable method was to buy the premium chests and hope you'd roll a Legendary, which often cost tons of money), and if you did get one, there was no way to guess which Legendary you'd actually get. Some such as White Rose and Adam were high tier units, others like Hazel or Checkmate were... kinda broken at launch. The playerbase isn't happy at this, especially as free to play players are left out in the cold and reliant on the game giving them high tier units effectively out of pity. Neon would get a small nerf in the April patch which lessened her taunt range and killed the Disco Bear meta, but her invincibility would be left untouched, even as players submitted feedback regarding how to make it more efficient. The official Amity Arena discord has a weekly feedback section on Tuesdays where players could submit up to four suggestions on how to nerf/buff units and general requests for quality of life such as "Can this character get a new skin from this part of the show," or "Can we have an option to lower music volume that's not just muting all music?" (they never did add that second request) Neon would then remain in this state until the November patch, despite constant weekly requests for a Neon rework, and all it would do is make Neon functionally mortal, in that she had a flat shield bar of 20 that would be lowered by one for each attack before the next hit would kill her. Neon could now die... but your chances of actually doing enough damage to stop her were slim, and regardless, you were now at a serious Aura defecit. It took seven months for this one unit to get a substantial nerf, all while the game added new units every week and the number of units being affected by patches each month began to gradually sink. To round up some of the major issues people had with Amity that developed throughout 2019 alongside Neon's general existance making life hell:
Common units were meant to be chump fodder, but could level up the most amount of times with a level cap at 13. This meant longer-term units that had a long time to level such as the Xiong Family card, the AK-130s the Beowolf Pack, or the White Fang gunners, could become shockingly strong if players grinded the money up to reach max level.
A pre-existing divide between free players and players willing to burn money IRL to get access to premium currencies led to a huge disparity in play. Free players have long complained about how hard it is to scrounge money together to level up units at higher costs as even the basic currency of Lien is hard to get large quantities of (you get a certain amount every match win but otherwise you need to burn the Schnee Premium Dust currency for the highest payouts, but SPD is also needed for shop resets, buying crates or unlocking cosmetics). The developers used to do frequent double weekends where all gains were doubled for a weekend, but these became less and less frequent as time went on. Legendaries only added to the divide, as their rarity was bad enough for players willing to spend money (one player, known as one of the largest whales in the community, in trying to get Sienna Khan, reported burning nearly nine hundred dollars on her, while taking nearly six hundred to get the Ice Flower card).
One actual counter was born to fight Neon in the Argus Shield, a stationary unit that existed solely to stall units and take damage. At 2 Aura, it was the first structure to counter Neon, which allevated one of the primary problems with Neon in that no way to counter her was cost-efficient for an enemy player. They buffed the Wall to 3 Aura eventually which killed that hope, and all this happened before Neon's November nerf.
The Summer of 2019 saw a large number of defensive units released; alongside the Argus Shield, several different units were released themed around turrets for the technological kingdom of Atlas, such as the Beam Turret. The Atlesian Burrow Gun was the straw that broke the camel's back and made for a miserable meta as the Burrow Gun would only appear (and be available to take damage) when a unit entered its range. These three units together were all very overpowered on launch and led to a large exodus of players sick of defensive and chip-based metas, especially as what few offensive units that were good enough to counter these metas (such as Professor Port and Adam Taurus) were often nerfed into the ground within a month of release.
Also around this time it became apparent that the developers were unable to meet the quotas that Rooster Teeth was forcing on them. The social media team admitted that a certain number of units needed to be in the game in time for Winter 2019 when Volume 7 was set to start, and as the year went on more and more game-breaking bugs were being found in units, or they were at best horrifically undertuned or overpowered. The Apathy was perhaps the largest case of this, as an unfound bug pre-release meant that the Apathy (who have a passive ability that let them self-duplicate) had no cap on their power, meaning that they could immediately overwhelm defenses and in the case of some phones, be such a resource hog the phone would crash. Many Legendary units were especially guilty of being under-tuned due to low Legendary availability meaning they were simply weren't powerful enough to compare with high-levelled units. Checkmate's ability simply didn't work at launch, and Neon made several more such as Hazel Rainart a joke. May Marigold's invisibility bubble would have been an interesting game changer... were it not for a bug that made it that units placed in the bubble still played their sound lines, meaning players knew what to expect. Things were so bad that when Flower Power launched and wasn't broken or needed an emergency patch, the playerbase were shocked.
Unfortunately, the Novemember patch did little to stop the problems with Neon, and a new problem would rear its head for Christmas: Jinn. This unit embodied many of the problems players had: She was a Legendary so it would be hard for free players to get her, and only added to the sheer number of Legendaries that were out there. She was another structure card, and she was horrifically broken. Stopping time for seven seconds in an area around any friendly units, Jinn broke the game overnight, with players horrified at how little playtesting she'd clearly had. Most chip units now couldn't damage structures as Jinn simply could stop time and freeze the turret for the duration of the attack. And to make matters worse? She cost two Aura, meaning it was very easy to cycle a deck and start Jinn spamming. And yet at two aura she was still one of the only cost-efficient Neon counters... until they patched her to be worth three Aura instead. Talking of the feline menace, January saw Neon get a HP nerf that set her shield at 14. Finally, Neon could be realistically be taken out, still at an Aura defecit but at least it can be countered and now they just have to raise her Aura- why are you buffing her game? Less than a month later, Neon got, of all things, a buff. Her HP shield was set at 20, and her attacks now did double damage. This is around the point where a lot of players begin to suspect the developers aren't listening to feedback and more long-term players dip out or drop the game. Neon got touched one more time in April, which slowed her down (which itself was a problem as Neon's lessened speed on spawn simply made her better at generating aggro), she dealt 10% less damage and made it somewhat easier to hit her enough to kill her, but a new problem was on the horizon. Because Neon was now no longer the game's White Whale for patches. Meet the White Fang Gunner Barracks. Added in September 2019, the Barracks fell under many player's radar simply because they were horrifically undertuned. Their gimmick was that every few seconds, a White Fang Gunner would spawn, with three spawning on death. In April, as Neon got her last appearance in the patches, the Barracks got a huge buff and became the centerpiece of the meta; they now spawned two Gunners, which made them immensely valuable for just five Aura. You could overwhelm many anti-swarm units before they had a chance, and shred your way through turrets. The Barracks would then go six months before this overtuning was rectified, barring one nerf in August that lowered their health to try and stem the tide of units. To sum up every other thing that went wrong during the year meta-wise:
The playercount was getting so low that players were able to make lists of the AI bots the developers had in place so lower-level players had a challenge (Amity breaks up players by a trophy system where you gain trophies with every win, and by this point most of the active players were in the 2500 to 3500 range. This also meant new players steamrolled through the lower levels only to hit a brick wall in the 3000 range, with the only reliable solution being to willingly lose matches until you were in your optimal range and grind victories until you reached a certain level.
The patches became more and more threadbare, going from 8+ units getting changed each month in early 2019 to three units at most getting changed in 2020 patches outside of the anniversary patch going back to the golden days of eight. The only area where they didn't get more threadbare was in the cosmetics and emotes that the developers were cranking out, all of which were only available through hours of grinding or premium currencies. This was despite the fact that the units were being released slower, going from once a week to once a fortnite.
The majority of units added in 2020 were Epic or Legendary tier, which were the hardest to get for free players unless they got lucky and they were added to the store (and if they had the lien as a Legendary in the store costs a flat 40,000 Lien). One Common and four Epics were released compared to twelve Epics and seven Legendaries. The release of Moonslice Adam especially was annoying for this regard, as Adam already had a Legendary released (at least for Team RWBY, each of them headlined a Legendary when it came to the team attack cards), and this was clearly done to pander to Adam's fans again as his first unit saw a spike in interest in the game. The math was done and showed how artifically scarce Legendaries were made.
The undeovertuning was still in play. Colossus is seen as one of the worst cards in the entire game because of its gimmick. I have literally never seen anyone play it. Flynt became overtuned and now he's a staple thanks to his trumpet's AOE attack being able to hurt turrets and shred most units. Launcher Nora was an especially overtuned unit thanks to her high-damage constant AOE barrage and long range meaning she could annhilate most anything if given enough cover. Even after patches she's still dangerous. September saw the White Fang Dropship Formation added, which was widely seen as a terrible unit and done as an emergency addition because the planned unit for September in the Grimm Seer had to be cut last minute for technical reasons.
The game has barely had significant content added since launch, with the primary gameplay still just being PVP. Barring Battle of Beacon (a mode where you can play as Ruby and Weiss and fend off Grimm which most players just use to grind chests, and no, they still haven't added Blake or Yang) and Plaza (a lobby where you can dress up as a character and run around Beacon), the game has added no new features and quality of life content players have requested since launch (rerolling in the shop, Superior Crates having guaranteed Legendary spawn rates) have been released at a snail's pace (you still can't reroll Legendaries if you're looking for a specific unit). Academies where players can unite to trade units and chat still lacks features that have been requested for years such as the ability to delete messages. And Plaza immediately went to hell because players were doing erotic role play in the chats and after people came forward with proof that minors were being sexually harassed in the Plaza or being coerced into side-channels, the dev response was to... just turn off the chat entirely instead of banning the accounts or implementing moderation. This also removed the chatlog which deleted a lot of the evidence of said harassment.
As OctobeNovember comes in, the players are getting more and more furious. The weekly feedback includes a near constant demand for an acknowledgement from the developers given how often it feels like the feedback is being ignored. The social media team get caught several times hyping up how the coming patch would address player concerns, only for said patch to lack those units. The meta has been locked down to the Xiong Family, Flynt, Launcher Nora, Spider-Mines and the hell-cat herself in Neon. Everyone runs at least one of these, people run meta decks not because they want to, but because it's the only way to have a chance of victory. And then in December, things implode. The patch for the month was set to launch on December 10th with the monthly event missions. But when the clock rolls around, the event missions (which usually take about two weeks to do if you're doing as many as you can a day)... has a six day timer. And the update doesn't come out. The art team doesn't release new unit art. The shop has no special timed bundles. There's no patch notes. And then the Twitter team who've been hard carrying the game through... actually talking to the players and acknowledging the grievances they have... admitted that they don't know what's going on either. The best guess is that the devs have come down with Covid, but no statements to confirm or deny this leave it as guesswork. The timer eventually got reset and people could do the event, but then on Christmas itself, another issue. Ruby has appeared in the plaza on Halloween (her canonical birthday) and Christmas, and if you go talk to her you get free stuff. But on Christmas people, people discovered that Ruby was talking as if you'd already talked to her. Because they hadn't updated Ruby yet for 2020. She still thought it was 2019 so if you'd talked to her then for goodies, she had none now. They patched it eventually but a lot of people didn't see this fix before the timer ran out to get the free stuff. Some have resorted to memes to cope with the fact that the game just seems to have died out of the blue. Others have been trying to desperately rally the players and find a way to save it. Some resorted to friendly mockery of the whales who'd spent thousands on a game that seems to be dying (seriously though gacha games need to curb this shit but they won't because whales are godsends for their bank balances). If the game doesn't get an update in January then two months without new content will mark the end, and the already significant playercount drops will only increase. And it's hard to say if any one thing could have turned Amity Arena's fate around beyond just "Have a better balancing team who can respond better to feedback." Neon began the time of death, but by the time December rolled around the meta was in a horrifically toxic place where if you wanted to make any progession, you had to get down and dirty with the pigs. The team just constantly failed to balance problem units outside of their emergency hotfixes of Jinn, and more often then not they went after units and buffed or nerfed them at random going off playcounts to determine what needed fixing instead of the actual written feedback they were getting. It's clear from the references to the show and some of the attempts to reach out to the community that at least one person in the team genuinely wanted to make the good appealing to RWBY fans, but somewhere during the game's lifespan, they lost their way. Less focus needed to be put on how to milk the players, and instead focusing on making a game sustainable and enjoyable enough to warrant the cosmetics and emotes. The game's failure ultimately isn't on the playerbase. It's on the people who were actually making the game who chose to slack off because they thought it acceptable to do so. Thanks for reading. Mission Overview The ninth Starlink launch overall and the eighth operational batch† of Starlink satellites will launch into orbit aboard a Falcon 9 rocket. This mission is expected to deploy 58 satellites into an elliptical orbit about fifteen minutes into flight. In the weeks following launch the satellites are expected to utilize their onboard ion thrusters to raise their orbits to 550 km in three groups of 20, making use of precession rates to separate themselves into three planes. Riding along are 3 SkySat satellites launched for planet labs. The booster will land on a drone ship approximately 628 km downrange. Half of Falcon 9’s fairing previously flew on the JCSAT-18/Kacific1 mission, and the other half previously flew on SpaceX’s third Starlink mission. Hello I am looking too get a few roles filled for me in a rpg that I am currently in this is what the rpg is about The small town is the location of one of the top Private high schools and colleges in the world. Located just in the heart of the town Winston-Salem, North Carolina is the perfect location to send your child, but no one tells you that dorms are facing a cemetery. The township of Winston-Salem is the starting point for exploring Witch craft and the mountains of North Carolina. Though the town is amazing for its own. Winston-Salem is surrounded by mountains, and is the definition of quaint, with manicured gardens, buildings with rock façades, and hanging flowerpots dotted around the main street, every month is a warmer month, hurricane season even everyone agrees the rain is beautiful. Enjoy the town’s home away from home feeling, and their amazing mountains, along with the weather. Winston-Salem is the ultimate destination for the outdoor people, people whom are visiting or people who have lived their there whole life. And then a little four hour drive you can make it to the ocean line. Though in the spring of 2019, at the beginning of June, there was a reoccurring situation happening on the campuses of the high school and college that phasing was happening to the point that several of the students had passed away. That wasn’t the only reoccurring thing that happened not here on campus of the high school and college people were receiving video tapes and tape recorder tapes of inside their dorm room or their sorority house. It had got to the point that no one felt safe so when the kids went home for the summer the dean had cleared out most of the dorm rooms and sorority houses. It wasn’t until the fall of 2019 when everyone was back on campus that they realized that the ongoing‘s were still happening but now that the ongoing‘s were happening in everyone’s house around town. That people were receiving video tapes and tape recorders of their house around town. Was this a collection of someone’s? Was this person dangerous? Was what everyone was thinking. Mission Overview
The seventh Starlink launch overall and the sixth operational batch of Starlink satellites will launch into orbit aboard a Falcon 9 rocket. This mission is expected to deploy all sixty satellites into an elliptical orbit about fifteen minutes into flight. In the weeks following launch the satellites are expected to utilize their onboard ion thrusters to raise their orbits to 550 km in three groups of 20, making use of precession rates to separate themselves into three planes. From time to time, Pokedex100 & PokeXperience will remove inactive users from their groups to allow new people to join. If you don't want to lose your spot, you need to press on one of the emotes in the messages of the announcement or news section regularly to stay active even if you don't send messages.
Many Discord groups have strict rules. If you do not follow them, you will get banned from their group and there is nothing I can do to you help you get unban from a Discord group.
Anyone who is found posting "I got a banned from a Discord group" will get their post removed. Next time, you should read and follow their rules!!!

You may need to select which team you are in like Mystic, Instinct, or Valor before you can see all the channels within a Discord group.

This is a dissection and explaining of the original Roblox iceberg meme made and posted here by u/Opti101. As someone who's been here since 2008, I was surprised at just how much I was able to instantly recognize, and I wish to shed a light on it for those who might not remember or are new. There's some stuff I missed, but hopefully it's not enough that this will feel lacking. Let's begin our dive!
Surface Level
1x1x1x1 This account in reality was created by Shedletsky to test site features, but the cryptic name has caused it to be a part of creepypasta theories since the beginning of the community, painting the account as belonging to a hacker that's waiting for just the right moment to return and ruin everything. Part of the urban legend might have stemmed from the fact that in the early days someone had found an exploit that allowed them to inject code into games in real time. Former admin MrDoomBringer actually went into detail about how the exploit worked. The exploiter asked him to see what he had found, and made it rain head parts labelled "1x1x1x1 is coming for you!" in a Crossroads server. MrDoomBringer obviously found it hilarious, but the other players in game at the time didn't have the context and thus found it terrifying. A neat trend in Roblox urban legends you will see as we go further is that more often than not they tend to be based in real, tangible exploiting incidents. However without an affinity for understanding how games work, most players saw them with an aura of mystique. The Robox The Robox is the prank that the site's staff pulled in 2019. It was allegedly a brand new console, having 8K rendering capabilities and being seemingly able to connect even to devices without wifi. On April 2nd, the Robox was made into the hat accessory you can see today. Comment spambots These have plagued the website since its early beginnings. There have been noteable incidents where unknown companies managed to create thousands of bots in a matter of weeks thanks to the lack of Captcha verification that used to be an issue. Nowadays they still exist, however the most common bots tend to be compromised accounts. Fake login prompt scams These tend to be deeply correlated with spambots. Via the promise of robux and whatnot many young, naive players fall for fake login prompts present in robux scam websites. The accounts are compromised and become part of the botnet. jaredvaldez By far one of the most infamous members of the community. Jared was notorious for taking an advantage of an old exploit that allowed you to gain access to copylocked games. I believe almost all of the games in his library were blatantly ripped off from other people due to that. He was a scam artist and generally unlikeable to boot. He got terminated multiple times as a result. That said this does have a happy ending. Jared has popped back up on the internet, older and nowhere near as distasteful as he used to be. He has expressed interest in returning to the site, though I don't think he still makes Roblox videos. John and Jane Doe I'll be honest in that I find this one extremely obnoxious. There used to be a pre-existing urban legend behind these two accounts before clickbait youtubers came in and turned it into a terrible creepypasta. For those who don't know, John and Jane are some of the earliest accounts ever made on the site. They go all the way back to the site's inception, since if I recall correctly, they were made for checking if login and game launching worked. I think these might be way older than 1x1x1x1 was, since when they were active the staff actually needed to join players in games so they had someone to play with. They had the same aura of mystique as 1x1x1x1 did, in that the community saw the accounts as hackers just waiting to get their chance to return. I feel like the first wave of youtubers that covered them tried to keep this aesthetic, but it didn't take long before chucklefucks pushed it to the route of bad creepypastas. You know, those "MY GAME IS HAUUUUNTED!!!" types. Tix Removal This was by far one of the most infamous changes ever made to the game. Tix was basically the free currency of Roblox for the longest time. Everytime you logged in or someone visited your places you would earn tix. Almost, if not all, player-made clothing was made to be purchased in tix. I believe the reason tix had to go was because you could convert tix into robux and viceversa. Modern times probably meant that there was a tool out there that let people exploit tix generation methods and amass some truly massive ammounts of tix, and therefore robux, as a result. Fun fact, when the retirement of tix was announced, the exchange rate absolutely TANKED as a result.
Below Sea Level
I'll be honest in that I feel this iceberg dives really quickly into barely documented territory. Lots of old Roblox content is, sadly, kind of lost media at the moment. Part of the reason modern-day John and Jane Doe shit makes me so mad is because the original urban legends have become even harder to find as a result of all the new content swamping search engines. Keep in mind that some stuff might be just regular iceberg bs added as flavor by the original creator. Shirts... and Pants Pants Pants This is an old, though easy to find, promotional video for Roblox promoting the user-made aspect of, well, shirts and pants. It's extremely goofy and catchy, I definitely recommend you check out the song. NobleDragon is a furry This is a meme that began to circulate around 2015 when someone found out that the business/SFW Twitter account of NobleDragon was following a NSFW furry artist. The meme caught on because NobleDragon is rather infamous for abusing his admin status and frequently antagonizing members of the community such as Reuben Sim. "Horror" music I believe this refers to an old asset posted by the staff back in the early days. Urban legends make it sound scarier than it reportedly was. The Cursed House I'm pretty sure this refers to an old creepy game. I wasn't one for creepy games back in the day, though, so I can't tell you which one is this referring to. Circle studs lawsuit My memory of this one is rusty, but I think it was an early legal issue that Roblox faced against LEGO. Back in the day the studs in the brick parts used to be round just like in LEGO parts. This happened during a period where LEGO's patents were all expiring, culminating in the original patent expiring in 2011. As a result of this, LEGO's legal team was antagonizing toy companies that began to sell plastic brick toys, and I guess they saw Roblox's virtual bricks as part of this group. Front page porn game hacks This is one that I SWEAR saw myself, many other people reported it too when it allegedly happened (I can't think of the exact timeframe, but it was most likely before 2015). That said I've got no idea if what I'm thinking of is the incident the iceberg talks about or if it was something completely different. A hacker or group of hackers got into the website, I believe, and made it so inappropiate porn games got into the front page for a while. Keep in mind though that this is Roblox-tier porn, so just imagine stuff like a dummy model with two sphere parts in front of it to emulate titties. There might have been a game or two that actually displayed NSFW pictures, but I don't recall correctly. Abandoned 2007 games These aren't so much urban legends as legitimate lost media. Most of these old games never changed and should technically still be on the website today, however finding them has proven a challenge due to either their owners getting terminated or just having their usernames be lost to time. Roblox has a really awful search engine which hasn't lent itself towards archival in any capacity. I know there's some people here who get together and start digging around based on certain clues. (Anyone else remember lemurboy12's Super Mario-esque places?) Out of bounds model glitches Again, I'm not really sure if this is referring to a specific incident, but on multiple occassions players have been able to crack games and get into places of the map that they normally wouldn't be in. I don't know if a specific glitch messed up models, I've never heard of that, but I wouldn't rule it out completely as being impossible. If anyone has the specific answer to this, please let me know. "Honest politicians" This is one that I genuinely have no clue what it's about. Any contributions would be a great help! 2012 April Fool's Incident I left this one for last because it has to be, in my opinion, the best in this level of the iceberg. I can't go into much detail, and I highly recommend instead you look it up on the Roblox Wikia, but here's a quick rundown: In April 1st, 2012, a user got into the Roblox website by creating an account in a test site meant only for staff members. The user began wreaking havoc on the website, writing custom banners, messing with the accounts of some notable members of the community at the time, messing with items for sale, and creating an infamous face decal that was briefly up for sale. By far the most controversial actions commited by the user was leaking hundreds of new assets the staff had yet not made public, as well as using two puppet accounts to unban a user caught in a Limited Item scandal. The staff had to briefly shut down the site in the late hours of April 1st to sort things out and get the user out of the server.
Middle of the Iceberg
Fleskhjerta's banned models Fleskhjerta was a popular user back in the early days of 2007-2008. If I recall correctly, he made quite a lot of popular videos back in the early days both of Roblox and YouTube. He didn't quietly exit the community, rather, his career was cut short when his Roblox account got terminated. Back in the day, Roblox worked more towards the three strike system of moderation, and Flesk was already on thin ice over having shared two of his videos in the old wiki, which contained profanity. The models part refers to the strike that got him terminated. Months after the first strikes, a staff member found an old model Flesk created, which was a standard dummy model with two cylinder pieces to resemble boobs. This model was the result of his termination. Lost 2006-2007 clients Again, these are more along the lines of true lost media than urban legends. These early clients were very different from the later builds, but little to no documentation has been made of them. Just like the lost 2007 games, the search for these old clients has been ongoing amongst small search parties. Source of "uuhhh.wav" (Oof sound) The iconic death noise wasn't made for Roblox. It was ripped from a 2000's shooter game called Messiah, with the sound file itself dating to 1999. EnergyCell This is an infamous individual who I can cover more in the Graphictoria incident later down the iceberg. "John" model This is something that I wasn't able to find information about. I'd like to assume it relates to the John Doe ordeal, but I can't say for sure since I have no context for this. It's something that I need help indentifying. Virtual kpop groups I think this might refer to that weird community in Instagram and Twitter of uncanny Roblox player models with realistic face decals superimposed to resemble real people. I think some people are using that weird trend to recreate groups like BTS, but thanks to the trend's uncanniness they look postively gross. C: This emoticon resembles the infamous face decal that was made in the 2012 April Fool's incident. I can only assume the reason it's lower on the list is that, without proper context, it looks creepier than it actually is. Dynablocks Dynablocks was a precursor to Roblox all the way back in 2003. This doesn't mean that Roblox is a sequel, as Dynablocks was essentially just Roblox really, REALLY way back into development. The website for Dynablocks exists, and for a while it used to redirect to Roblox, however it has been broken for a while. Julius Cole Another infamous scammeplace robber. He rose to infamy by having stolen 1dev2's Welcome to the Town of Robloxia. He was eventually found guilty of stealing games and models and got terminated. However, unlike Jared, Julius' presence online after termination was much more toxic. He frequently made threats and generally nasty comments aimed at the staff and promiment players in his Twitter account, which earned him a suspension. He's also known for his erratic and equally obnoxious YouTube videos. People have said that he might be a long-running troll, and I wouldn't find it surprising. However, troll or not, harrassment and threats directed at people who caught you red-handed on your bullshit is something I find deplorable. Troll or not, he doesn't deserve a second chance unlike other people in a similar situation as his.
Bottom of the Iceberg
MLP FiM: Roleplay was stolen I have a hunch that this is so low on the iceberg due to how there's basically no information regarding it. I assume this refers to an incident where someone managed to steal a copylocked game, or some sort of sabotage during development allowed for a developer to steal the assets. Again, if anyone has more information on this, please let me know. 9/11 Rememberance hat Back in the days of the forum, there used to be a rumor that, supposedly, the staff had created a hat for some sort of 9/11 memorial event. This was a rumor, so it might have been completely unfounded, but if it was true, it's possible the staff never released it in the fear it might have been seen as distasteful. WONGA WONGA WONGA This refers to a sound file that would commonly blare in games that had recently been exploited. I'm not sure in which exploiter wave this was featured in, since throughout Roblox history there's been multiple "waves" of mass exploits whenever a new tool or vulnerability is found, and each exploiter group has had its own identity. Whenever it showed up, it was most likely the signature move of an exploiter or group of exploiters. Graphictoria controversy Graphictoria was a free engine that was meant to emulate the feel of old Roblox versions and games. EnergyCell, the lead developer, was eventually discovered to have been a raging sociopath, and Graphictoria was revealed to have been sending log in information, which was supposed to be confidential, to a server that only he had access to without the players' consent nor knowledge. People suspected that due to his nature, he was bound to use this data for blackmail, and when he was found out he was reportedly threatening people with suicide multiple times. This is well-documented, so I highly recommend that you look up the full story for yourself. JJ5x5's account hacked This is something that JJ himself confirmed as being true. JJ5x5 is an old player that's most famous for his old video series back in the early days of Roblox and YouTube. JJ didn't verify his email address when he got hacked, so the hackers very quickly got access to his account. Lost forum posts Due to the very nature of how the forums used to work, certain posts were naturally lost to time. However, the history leading up to the complete removal of the forums led to a massive loss of content. For a while, it seemed the staff didn't know whether or not to get rid of the forums, so they instead opted to merge the forums into much more broader categories. Some forums suffered greatly when the merge happened, as they essentially got obliterated due to their low usage in comparison to the more popular ones. David's late 80's prototype This is an alleged prototype that David supposedly created, which would lead into DynaBlocks and then into Roblox. However, there's no real proof that this prototype actually exists. David first thought up the concept that would become Roblox in the 80's, but he never actually created a working prototype. Technology at the time wouldn't have let him create a working prototype at all, so this is pretty much just fake. Roblox Studio pornography This is another one I'm not 100% sure about. It might refer to the few incidents where moderation hasn't been able to catch inappropiate models and decals as they're uploaded into the public library. Ghosts This was a much more prevalent urban legend back in the days where the game was smaller and you were more likely to end up alone on a server. Allegedly, there's been multiple reports of people playing alone in servers, when suddenly the place they're in starts to be modified or outright exploited as if there was another player there. There were also reports of sightings of transparent player models in the distance or cryptic chat messages coming from unidentifiable users in lonely servers. Despite being one of the more fantastical points in this iceberg, it's likely that some reports might have been true in one way or another. For one, an exploiter or developer could have decided to prank the lonely player, messing with them to give them a scare. In another way, the game could have code that either randomly triggers an event, or triggers an event after certain time has passed. In a game where we can code what happens, who's to say someone hasn't created an easter egg like this?
The Abyss
Lost Roblox bloopers I'm pretty sure these refer to lost videos of the early days of Roblox youtubers. I know for sure there's plenty of entries I used to watch way back when that I can't find to this day. Much like the lost games and clients, the search is on. 2005 client This is a fabled version of the client much more rare and older than the 2006/2007 clients. I don't even know if there's anyone who ever got to have them that wasn't a staff member or playtester. I don't even know if it truly exists. If it is real, I suppose we can only hope that the staff is good at keeping archives. blockvoid(): This is another bullshit entry. There's absolutely no record of this sort of command being the focus of a Roblox urban legend, and I think the original creator of the iceberg image made it just to give the meme an air of creepiness to it. If it does turn out to be real, it might have either been a failed creepypasta, or something that genuinely caused Studio to freak out or do weird things. MisterObvious' Discord audio files For those not in the know, MisterObvious was a popular Roblox personality that was eventually discovered to be an extremely nasty pedophile and sexual predator, who used his fame to sexually abuse minors in his Discord server. This point most definitely references the recordings of sexually charged Discord calls that were used as evidence for his investigation. I think a censored version of them were featured in one of the first videos exposing him. It's highly likely the recordings are still circulating online, however due to their nature, I'd recommend you to not look for them. camel_slaughter.mp4 This filename refers to a video of a camel getting its neck sliced that was spammed by an unkown user in plug.dj rooms that were created for forum threads when the forums were still up. I'm not sure if this incident was old or relatively recent, however I've seen some people claim the sound version of the clip was used in other non-Roblox games. desdemona Finishing with a player shrouded in mystery, desdemona is a supposed Roblox user that was known for their cryptic and disturbing forum posts. Apparently, they were responsible for the hacking of several unnamed players that frequented the threads where he popped up. There's little to no documentation about him, and the current desdemona is a player that seems completely unrelated to him (although still posted general nonsense in the forums). And there you have it, folks! Almost all points on the iceberg explained and put into context! While I missed some stuff, I feel like Opti missed some stuff themselves. There's some obscure knowledge like ?iloveyou and the Studio viruses which I was suprised didn't get covered. Again, if you're someone who knows about the stuff I missed, please let me know! While this is a meme, I was surprised at just how much of our spooky, hidden content actually has its roots in the truth due to the nature of the game. Only time will tell if what we know nowadays will become rumors in the future.

In this post, we’ll walk through a number of lessons the mod team took from the recent “State of the Subreddit” survey, several changes and upcoming events that we’ll be implementing, and a number of projects for you to look forward to on the horizon. State of the Subreddit Survey Results
Thank you to all of the 600+ members of the /CurseOfStrahd community who submitted responses to our recent “State of the Subreddit” survey! If you’re interested, you can view all data collected here before we start our analysis below.
Community Metrics
The vast majority of subreddit members appear happy with how the community is currently being managed, with 36% awarding a 4/5 rating and 57% awarding a 5/5 rating. Of course, there are always things that we can improve, as indicated by the 6% of respondents who awarded a 3/5 rating. We'll discuss some of our proposed solutions to community criticism and feedback below. The vast majority of our respondents appear to be extremely active in the subreddit, with 39% visiting the subreddit multiple times a week, and nearly 50% visiting at least once a day. Only 8% of respondents visit the subreddit once a week or less (though, of course, this is likely impacted by selection bias and similar factors). This survey was posted both in the subreddit and on the /CurseOfStrahd Discord server. As such, while 40% of survey respondents indicated that they are semi-active members of the Discord, the true number would likely be much lower if it had only been posted on the subreddit. As the Discord is one of the most active hotbeds of /CurseOfStrahd community discussion and assistance, one of the lessons we've taken from this data is that we can do a better job of directing people to the Discord for resources, advice, and discussion.
Community Events
There was a widespread show of interest in bringing back community events, such as community discussions, competitions (e.g., the meme competition or Strahd Must Die Tonight), or community commissions. As such, we’ll be implementing a new quarterly event cycle, with an aim of ensuring that there’s always an event to participate in. The cycle will be as follows: Community Competition (Four Weeks). The first event in the cycle will be a community competition, either involving content production, competitive module gameplay, or a similar contest. Battlemap or Audio Commission (Two Weeks). The community will vote on a battlemap or audio track (e.g., location ambience) to commission from a moderator-chosen artist. Subreddit members can then donate to a GoFundMe to fund the project, which will be made freely available to the community once complete. Community Discussion (Four Weeks). The moderators will pin a stickied thread on the front page of the subreddit, in which community members can respond to specific prompts or discuss their experiences with specific module-related topics, such as locations in Barovia, campaign AUs, past Ravenloft content, or monsteNPC tactics. Artwork Commission (Two Weeks). The community will vote on a location or character artwork to commission from a moderator-chosen artist. Subreddit members can then donate to a GoFundMe to fund the project, which will be made freely available to the community once complete.
Event Sponsorships
The mod team is exploring new sponsorships of community events and competitions. Past experience with sponsorships include a raffle sponsored by DnDBeyond for our 1-year subreddit anniversary in 2018, and Roll20’s sponsorship of the Strahd Must Die Tonight for our 2-year subreddit anniversary in 2019. In addition to these products, we are also in talks with the creator of Foundry VTT regarding potential sponsorship opportunities. These sponsorships may take the form of awards for competition winners, platforms for gameplay contests, or affiliate links to subsidize community commissions. As always, transparency and accountability remain our foremost priority, and we will make sure to be open with our community members about any sponsorships and the terms thereof.
Community Content
Many respondents to the survey indicated a great interest in guides to monster and NPC combat tactics, as well as general tips and tricks for DMing. Some respondents also suggested their interest in compiled and professionally formatted versions of my and Mandy’s guides (Curse of Strahd: Reloaded and Fleshing Out Curse of Strahd), which we can confirm are potential projects that we are considering for the future. Several community members also indicated that they would like to see more accessible organization of community resources, especially including art, music, and battlemaps. We have some plans on how we’d like to address this, which we’ll discuss in a section below.
General Feedback
One or two survey respondents indicated that they had found some posts to be sexist, homophobic, or otherwise unacceptable under community standards. The mod team is always glad to remove bigoted or harmful posts; however, please make sure to report offensive or inappropriate content to make sure that it’s flagged for us to see. Some community members have also suggested that we reach out to other 5e campaign-specific subreddits to share some of our experiences and expertise (as /CurseOfStrahd is one of the most active and well-organized 5e campaign communities on Reddit). While this is more of a fuzzy project for now, it is something we will be looking into over the coming months.
Upcoming Subreddit Projects & Changes
“Twice Bitten” Livestream
I’m proud to (unofficially) announce “Twice Bitten,” a livestreamed Curse of Strahd campaign in the spirit of Critical Role that aims to answer a simple question: How does the campaign’s story change if the PCs are ordinary people, rather than trained adventurers? This summer (formal announcement pending), join me, DragnaCarta, and our party of five experienced Curse of Strahd DMs as we dive into Barovia with a fresh, yet veteran take on the battle against Count Strahd von Zarovich.
New Moderators Wanted
In the coming weeks, we’ll be formally requesting applications for new subreddit moderators. The available moderator positions are as follows: Curator Mod. Responsible for updating the subreddit FAQ and wiki, and curating the resources in the subreddit Discord. Community Mod. Responsible for moderating subreddit posts and responding to modmail. Events Mod. Responsible for drafting event posts, announcement posts, and communications to potential community sponsors. Programming Mod. Responsible for maintaining and updating CSS stylesheets for the Old Reddit version of the subreddit. We aren’t necessarily opposed to having one person take on multiple roles, if they think that they can handle the responsibilities. We are expecting to expand the moderator team slowly, and may not accept moderators for every position as we roll these changes out. More information and a full application coming soon.
Meme Mondays
Several survey respondents indicated their frustration with “low-effort” posts and memes, and suggested that the subreddit refocus to promote more high-quality content and discussions. As such, as an experiment, starting next Monday, June 1, the subreddit will be implementing Meme Mondays - a date when all members of the community may share and post Curse of Strahd memes. On all other days of the week, meme posts will be removed, and directed to re-post the following Monday. This is a trial run, and will run through July 1. Afterwards, we’ll try and take the temperature of the community to get a sense whether this new model has improved the quality of the subreddit, or whether subreddit members would like to see memes restored on non-Mondays.
New User Experience
We’ve noted that the “new user experience” on this subreddit is - for lack of a better word - suboptimal. Some survey respondents indicated that they were frustrated with certain frequently asked questions being asked repeatedly, rather than being directed to the existing megathreads or subreddit FAQs. Additionally, some newcomers have expressed frustration at the difficulty of existing compiled resources - namely, high-quality curated guides and assets such as battlemaps or artwork. As such, over the coming months, we will be attempting to better organize, streamline, and curate the content in our official subreddit guides. The megathreads will be relocated to the subreddit Wiki, and our new Curator Mod will be responsible for outlining and drafting a full “new DM guide” to walk new visitors through the resources, common guides, and tools available to them. During this process, we will also attempt to strengthen the newcomers’ pipeline to our subreddit Discord, a hub of active day-to-day communication and community discussion, and a frequent source of new ideas or projects. We are also looking at implementing new AutoModerator bots in the Discord that could automatically supply certain types of guides or resources on-command, though we want to make sure that any such automation does not snuff out the potential for community discussion.
