I watch a horror movie every day, here are the best ones I watched in 2020

(2020) Invisible Man 9/10
This remake, simply put, is excellent. I’m a huge fan of Leigh Whannell and while I do think the story itself is fantastic, it’s his directing that blew me away. This movie is so fucking tense without showing anything for a huge majority of its runtime. When shit actually starts to go down, it’s the definition of thrilling. Elisabeth Moss killed her role.
(2020) The Rental 8/10
The meat and bones of this movie is a character driven drama story. It’s tense and having so much knowledge right away as the viewer that the characters don’t have is frankly anxiety inducing, in a good way. I thought all four main performances were fantastic, especially Sheila Vand. There’s a moment in the film where everything is abruptly subverted in a grand horror fashion and depending on your tastes, that may be off-putting. To me, it was absolutely genius. Dave Franco directed the fuck out of this movie and eliminated all the comfort of campiness that great slashers usually hold.
(2020) Relic 8/10
Robyn Nevin is fantastic here and all the supporting roles are great but not only does this woman make the movie, she is the movie. Her dialogue, her delivery and her body language, at least to me, are a huge chunk of the entire plot. I just found this movie to be gentle until it isn’t, which makes for the most tense moments. It’s a very claustrophobic film; I think it does justice to a very serious and frightening illness.
(2020) Palm Springs 8/10
It doesn’t take long to catch on that, while this is a romantic comedy, it’s also a sci-fi horror film and a specific subset of sci-fi that makes me anxious. So in some regards, at least to genre placement, there’s my bias. The movie is seriously a treat though. It’s a new spin on an old formula and it’s genuinely funny, suspenseful and endearing. Even if you disagree that it shouldn’t be discussed in the horror circles, you won’t regret watching it.
(2020) Shirley 7/10
It’s an incredibly interesting film for many reasons but mostly because it exists as a biopic, as well as a psychological horror film. Jackson is played Elisabeth Moss who is just wonderful. She really brought to life the internal struggle of Jackson. I’d suggest doing some research before diving into this because her profession during the time period was not glamorous or widely accepted, which gives context to, well, everything.
(2020) Becky 8/10
Kevin James was fantastic. He’s a sadistic fuck in this movie. But he doesn’t deserve all the credit and the writers don’t either. I’m going to highlight Greta Zozula here. The most powerful moments in this entire film were purely cinematography based. Melanie Garros and Jenn McGouran deserve a shoutout as well. This was a cookie-cutter home invasion film at its core and these people, among others, made it one of my favorite home invasion films of the decade. Alissa Gee deserves recognition too for creating the most disgusting moment I’ve seen in a minute.
(2019) Parasite 9/10
This film is most obviously on-the-nose but in the same breath, so incredibly impactful. I can’t even describe the seamless transition from black comedy to horror. It’s a heartbreaking view on classism and poverty while also just being a thrilling experience. Every single performance is remarkable and natural. I’m not even sure what else to say without spoiling it. This film isn’t just specific to Asian culture but very relevant to anyone feeling that they’re in a rut.
(2019) Villains 8/10
The premise is sort of simple but the horror is in the details. i loved how everything played out and I thought all four main actors did an incredible job. Everything was super convincing which had me invested and tense. There’s a scene at the end, despite the movies dark, comedic aspects, that was really sweet and very climactic.
(2019) Swallow 9/10
Haley Bennett delivers a heartbreaking performance with a powerful but melancholy ending. The narrative itself is twisted and sadistic. This film make me anxious, depressed and in the end, I’m not sure it offered much reprieve. I loved this film but I’d caution anyone going through mental trauma to venture cautiously into it. It doesn’t promote anything negative but the subject matter can be difficult.
(2019) Nimic 8/10
When I googled the name of this film it gave me the Romanian translation of “nothing” but also, “everything”. For a 10-minute short it offers so much. It felt like a powerfully dark statement about performance in general.
(2019) The Head Hunter 9/10
This was one of the most creative, restrained yet somehow absolutely insane movies I’ve seen all year. I’m absolutely blown away. The exposition is limited and told so refreshingly through almost entirely visuals. It’s caused many viewers frustrations but for me, it was absolutely the best aspect. That’s saying a lot because visually, stylistically, it’s fucking remarkable. I’ve heard people say this movie is boring and to me, there’s not a dull moment throughout the entire film, not a single wasted shot. It’s thrilling, dark, gritty, campy at times and embodies this identity that’s both somehow fluid and refined. It feels like an arthouse film in its minimalism but avoids any pretentiousness you may associate with that sub-genre. Jordan Downey has done some intentionally so-bad-it’s good movies in the past and he clearly wanted to still reference those aspects through some of his shlocky, 50’s horror inspirations in here; especially Fiend Without a Face. That’s a creative decision that will turn a lot of people off but I just really appreciated it and it made the actual watching experience so incredibly fun.
(2019) The Lighthouse 9.5/10
This film is among the few that I felt compelled to watch it again almost immediately. It’s so incredibly rich in every aspect that can make a movie successful. The visuals are jaw-dropping; almost every single frame of this film is photographic. The soundtrack is stripped down to just these haunting sounds of fog horns and piss buckets. The package everything is delivered in, from an artistic standpoint, is so memorable. The performances by Pattinson and Dafoe are both some of the best I’ve seen this entire year and really, the decade…possibly of all time. They deliver this brilliant script’s dialogue with such passion, humor and intensity. The story in this film is shrouded in mystery but the clues and tools needed to decipher it do exist and with a rewatch, finding them felt so rewarding. It’s the kind of movie that I want to make my friends watch, simply so I have someone to discuss it with. It’s one of the best horror films I’ve ever seen.
(2019) I Trapped the Devil 7/10
This one is a bit of a slow-burn but I felt the tension from beginning to end so none of it felt like a blind investment. It had the potential to be another, cookie-cutter, pretentious statement but what I found it to be was simply a well-crafted horror film.
(2019) Pet Sematary 7.5/10
The original film was entertaining to me but I felt it was also dated and a bit too unintentionally silly for my tastes. So going into this, I was hoping for a darker, more serious film and I’m happy to say, that’s what I got.
(2019) Guns Akimbo 7.5/10
This is non-stop gory action, an absurd story and an insane performance by Radcliffe, who I’m such a big fan of at this point. The best part? It’s genuinely, laugh-out-loud funny, both through physical comedy and clever dialogue.
(2019) Harpoon 7/10
I enjoyed this movie a lot and I mean “enjoyed” in every sense of the word. It was the kind of movie to stop making me think so critically about the acting and cinematography because I just find the stranded genre so fun. This movie really delivered in both dark humor and pure, unpredictability.
(2019) Annabelle Comes Home 7/10
I know that Gary Dauberman has worked closely with the series so he definitely understands Wan’s Conjuring universe’s vibe. I mean that from both a pacing and cinematography standpoint. I loved that all the possessed artifacts come into play.
(2019) Vivarium 8/10
This movie is fucking terrifying. The cast may even be too loaded because it’s the environment and Senan Jennings that makes everything so scary. The final 30 minutes of this film are a complete mindfuck and just left my jaw on the floor.
(2019) It Chapter 2 9/10
It embodies the heartfelt, character driven story of King’s novel so incredibly well. Every single performance by the adult actors is fantastic and as much as people didn’t like the overuse of humor, it felt like a natural evolution to me. Things were destined to be less scary with the adult characters coming into contact with an evil they’ve faced before. The last 30-min to me were just so touching, sad and it was the culmination I was hoping for.
(2019) Zombieland: Double Tap 7.5/10
It’s certainly a sequel as far as sequels go but I had a ton of fun with it and it was great to see this group back together. It’s a super cheesy film and I would expect some hate but the original is cheesy fun too, if even to a lesser extent.
(2019) The Color Out of Space 7/10
The entire suspense if the film is how each individual character reacts to this unknown force but Cage’s is of course the most volatile. I love the body horror and I think the entire movie is pretty goddamn exciting in that aspect. It goes so far beyond what you’d expect.
(2019) Joker 9.5/10
To have a Batman-universe film stand out this much among all the others is incredible. This film intentionally evokes almost every emotion until a raw, chilling finale. Gotham is unkempt, unstable and teetering.
(2019) Come to Daddy 7.5/10
This movie is definitely a dark comedy but it’s incredibly interesting in that, among the dark humor, is a real horror movie and a very graphic one at that.
(2019) The Lodge 9/10
The misdirects in this story are excellent and I was blown away about how well the cinematography was used to manipulate the viewer. It feels like it’s twist after twist but in reality, nothing changes and that’s the scariest aspect to the entire movie.
(2019) Home with a View of the Monster 7/10
They do a fantastic job of storytelling, switching timelines and perspectives throughout the film. It’s a technique that’s been around longer than we’ve all been alive but one that’s not easily mastered.
(2019) Ready or Not 7.5/10
It’s just a ton of fun and Samara Weaving is fantastic. There’s so much great meta-humor and the effects are top notch. I think this sub-genre of sadistic games being played has been done to death so it was a welcomed surprise to see a film do it in such a successful way.
(2019) The Platform 9.5/10
One of my favorite things about horror is that you can trace history itself through the decades, with films reflecting the current political, social and economic state around the globe. First we has Us and then another incredible film Parasite, all with similar desperate themes of class instability. Then you have The Platform, which in its pure brutalism combines horror, religion and politics to make an incredibly powerful statement.
(2019) I See You 9/10
This film consistently surprised, disappointed and impressed me throughout its runtime based purely on my own expectations. It frankly made a fool out of me.
(2019) The Vast of Night 7/10
This movie is pretty low-budget but they really worked with what they had to create this warm, throwback aesthetic that just tickled my tiny little nuts. It’s a dialogue driven, on-the-nose Twilight Zone homage and I really enjoyed it.
(2019) John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum 8/10
The choreography and production is mesmerizing. This might be a Hollywood mainstream action film but the kills are powerful and fucking brutal.
(2018) Bloodline 7.5/10
Sean William Scott is a forever type casted actor but has managed to break free of that throughout the years and this is another great example of him doing just that. His performance is reserved but effective.
(2018) Gwen 8.5/10
It’s an incredibly heartbreaking story that, while exists in the folk-horror genre, subverts any and all expectations. Eleanor Worthington-Cox and Maxine Peaks carry the entire film.
(2018) Freaks 8/10
Emile Hirsch, Amanda Crew and Lexy Kolker were all great but it was Bruce Dern who blew me away. He’s such a powerful on-screen presence; just his delivery alone establishes a lot of the more horrifying elements to this film.
(2018) Overlord 8/10
I thought it would be a traditional zombie movie and the circumstances would be the twist but it was its own thing. It’s kind of difficult to describe but I think action-war-horror would be the closest thing I could pin it too. Jovan Adepo was a great fucking lead.
(2018) Monster Party 7.5/10
It’s awesome to experiment but this is a film that will appeal to almost everyone without feeling unoriginal or sold out. This is dark humor at its most enjoyable and the practical effects and gore are fucking awesome.
(2018) Pledge 7.5/10
It’s a simple premise but so well executed. I loved the ending and pretty much 95% of the creative decisions. This isn’t a bloodbath of a horror film but it’s violent as hell.
(2018) High Life 7/10
This film is a really uncomfortable watch from beginning to end. It’s filled with violent, psychosexual imagery, a disjointed narrative and cum. It ends and if you don’t outright hate it, it’s hard to explain why you like it because it’s such a rough watch. I fall in the latter category.
(2018) Possum 8/10
I love the way the story unfolds in the end, just methodically bit-by-bit until a crushing reveal. I felt for this main character and his pain seemed so real.
(2018) Wildling 8/10
Bel Powley and Liv Tyler both play very complimentary fantastic roles. There’s an extended portion of the film that’s almost uplifting and pleasantly strange, following their relationship with each other. I’m happy to say things turn sinister quickly and the last 30-minutes are a wild ride, to say the least.
(2018) The Nightingale 9.5/10
Jennifer Kent decided to put in such a universally disgusting scene that had people walking out of screenings and almost justifiably so. It’s really difficult to watch in portions. It’s just fortunate she followed it up with a masterpiece.
(2017) John Wick: Chapter 2 8/10
These assassins dance so carefully around innocent civilians that it almost comes off as a black comedy, in a great way.
(2017) My Friend Dahmer 8/10
To me, especially with Ross Lynch’s performance, it was an equally endearing and chilling film. It humanized someone who I’ve always considered to be a literal monster, which is something I don’t know how to feel about.
(2017) One Cut of the Dead 7/10
This movie is super creative and pretty fucking hilarious. It feels like a modern day Bowfinger.
(2017) Marrowbone 7.5/10
The characters portrayed are vibrant and fully realized, whether it be through substance or lack-there-of. I obviously don’t actively try and predict movies like a gameshow but this film seemed to excel in misdirect.
(2016) White Girl 8/10
It reminded me a lot of Larry Clark’s Kids but actually intelligently modernized to make a statement on these neighborhoods on the fringe of gentrification.
(2016) The Lighthouse 7.5/10
Mark Lewis Jones and Michael Jibson play their respective roles as the lighthouse keepers really well. Towards the end of the film when the story demands even more of them both, they truly deliver.
(2015) Room 9/10
Brie Larson is an incredible actress and plays this profoundly realistic character. There's moments where emotions do bubble over but most of the time, she does so much by doing so little.
(2015) Jurassic World 7.5/10
Some people will be completely turned off by some of the more absurd and out-there plot elements but I have to say, despite it being cheesy on paper, a lot of the newer sci-fi concepts just happen to work. This is bound to forever be kind of divisive but I liked it.
(2015) Tag 8.5/10
It’s like Tokyo Gore Police meets The Matrix. Sono makes a powerful statement on film media, gender oppression and interestingly enough, he doesn’t leave himself out of the lens of criticism.
(2015) The Invitation 9/10
This movie’s horror aspect is incredibly telegraphed and manipulated with these creepy violin sounds. However, Karyn Kusama’s impeccably clean cinematography and direction use all of that to its benefit.
(2014) John Wick 8/10
I saw this movie in theaters and let me just say, as a beagle owner, this may be my favorite revenge movie. Keanu Reeves is badass as shit and it was the first film in a long time to make me interested in action.
(2014) Spring 8.5/10
It feels helpless and hopeful at the same time, Benson’s script is amazing. I’ve always said that films shot in idyllic landscapes are a blank canvas for horror. There’s so much beautiful contrast.
(2014) The Treatment 7.5/10
This film is so unnerving, dark and depressing. The bones of it are structured like any crime thriller but the meat of it is pure depravity.
(2014) Clown 8/10
This is body horror and one of the better ones out there; the slow, methodical transformation throughout this movie was so effective.
(2014) The Incident 9/10
Bleak doesn’t even begin to describe this film. It’s pure nihilism, screamed loudly into the universe.
(2014) The Guest 8.5/10
I fucking love the story, Dan Stevens is fantastic and the production was cleanly executed. It’s Adam Wingard’s best film so far.
(2013) Blue Ruin 9/10
It’s a standout to me among revenge films. Macon Blair’s character isn’t some bloodthirsty ex-navy seal bent on revenge. He’s a completely broken man that’s overcome by heartbreak.
(2013) Evil Dead 7.5/10
It’s one of the few examples where a remake of a classic, near perfect movie, actually works.
(2013) Redemption 8/10
The film is shot so well, the editing and portrayal of the visuals all correspond to the ebb and flow of his characters physical and mental health.
(2013) Under the Skin 9/10
The second death in this movie is one of the most remarkably unsettling scenes I’ve witnessed to date.
(2011) The Strange Thing About the Johnsons 7/10
Astor flips child molestation on its head in a tense, sickeningly well-made film and I absolute hate it. Do not watch this movie, this will only detract from your overall happiness.
(2011) Contagion 9/10
There’s some fantastic performances by Paltrow, Law, Fishburne and quite a few others. However, it’s the research and writing of this film, the frightening scientific accuracy, that makes it so effective.
(2011) We Need to Talk About Kevin 9/10
This is probably one of the most sensitive subjects you can approach and I’m a huge fan of Lynne Ramsay. Ezra Miller has one of the most chillingly realistic performances of the decade.
(2010) Inception 9.5/10
It’s Nolan’s masterpiece in my mind and that statement isn’t to be taken lightly, as everything he’s done has felt powerful.
(2010) Buried 8/10
This is one of my favorite movies filmed all in one location. It’s tense, claustrophobic (obviously) and it feels genuinely helpless.
(2010) Skeletons 7/10
It’s a strange little film but it’s charming, smart and a refreshing take on the exorcism sub-genre.
(2009) The House of the Devil 8/10
My absolute favorite aspect of this film is the retro feel. It captured 70’s horror so incredibly well. Ti West is a talented filmmaker and this is one of my favorites by him.
(2009) Cropsey 7/10
If there was one thing I really took away from this film, it would be how society and children in particular adapt to unsolved murders.
(2009) The Loved Ones 7.5/10
It reminds of almost a modern day interpretation on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, if the dinner scene was the entire film.
(2008) Lake Mungo 9/10
This family is so incredibly natural, real and convincing. It’s not too over the top. The horror is hidden in every frame and simultaneously interwoven with heartbreak. Despite many previous and later films attempting to do what it does, I’ve never seen anything like it.
(2007) An American Crime 7.5/10
Elliot Page is wonderful as Sylvia Likens, she just has this innocent nature to her that amplified the violent aspects of the film. I loved the editing of courtroom footage throughout the runtime, it was a constant reminder that what you’re watching actually happened, despite the theatrical nature of the film at times.
(2007) Teeth 8/10
Teeth is actually such an incredibly hard movie to review critically. The film itself, as a whole, is so many things at once. It’s a comedy, an exploitation film, a revenge film and even sort of…a slasher? I have to give respect where respect is due.
(2007) Death Sentence 7/10
This movie is so goddamn intense during the action sequences that it actual reminds me more of a Max Payne video game film adaptation. It’s so over-the-top but in a really entertaining way.
(2007) Timecrimes 8.5/10
I loved this movie when I first saw it but upon re-watching it, I can’t help but stress its influence in the time-loop horror sub-genre. Sure films like Primer definitely helped pave the way but Timecrimes really manages to focus less on the science fiction and more on the horrifying consequences that come with time travel.
(2007) Zodiac 9/10
It’s not the most violent film, it’s much more story driven but the moments of violence feel fucking powerful. The horror in this film isn’t about the serial killer, it’s really about obsession and Gyllenhaal absolutely nails his performance to bring that aspect home.
(2006) Population 436 7/10
It didn’t aim to disgust or push boundaries; it’s just a fun, creepy story with a satisfying ending.
(2006) Children of Men 9.5/10
It’s a bleak film, as bleak as they come from some perspectives but through the violence and despair is a powerful message of hope. Clive Owen’s character is as a broken as the world around him and one of my favorite character arcs of all time.
(2005) Red Eye 7/10
The setup is sinister enough, being in the confines of a plane, to warrant it being discussed as a horror but it does devolve into an action thriller, not that I’m a genre-snob. Both Cillian Murphy and Rachel McAdams are fantastic and it’s a tight knit package.
(2005) The Descent 9.5/10
It’s absolutely terrifying and top-to-bottom, one of the most effective horror movies ever made. After seeing over a thousand horror projects, this still remains one of the most intense, period.
(2005) Constantine 8.5/10
Listen, I’ve obviously never even heard about this comic but let me just say, as a standalone movie, it’s fucking awesome. It’s basically Keanu Reeves battling his way through hell, murking demons and basically just being badass as shit.
(2004) Saw 8/10
It’s one of the most creative projects of the 00’s and a project that launched Wan’s and Whannell’s career. I can safely say, the two of them haven’t had any major misses since. This movie is raw, disturbing and has a strong mystery-driven backbone that makes it iconic and endlessly re-watchable. I absolutely love it.
(2004) Hellboy 7.5/10
Listen, I’m not a fucking nerd who is all-knowing about these comics and how well they translate to film but let me tell you, this movie fucking rocks. Ron Perlman kills this role and has so much personality.
(2000) The Gift 8.5/10
Everyone here is wonderful. If I had to pick a standout though, it would be Giovanni Ribisi. His performance is so raw and emotive. The unstable nature of his character actually held up as the backbone to the mystery portion of this film, making it very much unpredictable.
(1999) The Ninth Gate 9/10
It’s two hours of a giant satanic onion being peeled back layer by layer. It’s clear that when Polanski isn’t raping children, he’s creating filmmaking masterpieces.
(1999) Deep Blue Sea 7.5/10
The science-fiction aspects may be super contrived to someone smarter than I am but the entire movie is so goddamn entertaining. I love all the characters and LL Cool J is particularly hilarious.
(1998) Pi 7.5/10
Aronofsky is challenging religion with science and mathematics and it comes together in a really insane way.
(1997) The Lost World: Jurassic Park 7/10
One scene in particular that stuck with me was the raptors in the tall grass, so aesthetically gorgeous and well-shot. It’s not a perfect movie but Goldblum and Moore are charismatic, it’s fucking action packed and the set pieces are diverse as shit. This isn’t some dialed in bullshit for a quick buck.
(1997) Men in Black 9/10
Vincent D’Onofrio was fucking incredible. The entire villain that is Edgar is one of my favorites of all time. Everything from his speech, his loose-skin and awkwardly stiff gate just really sell it.
(1996) The Craft 7.5/10
I love all the acting and characters but Fairuza Balk is probably my favorite. She’s just so eclectic and over-the-top.
(1995) Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight 7/10
This is such a fun movie and very much in the Tales from the Crypt vein. It’s campy but super violent too; the practical effects are fucking dope. It’s kind of like Evil Dead meets From Dusk till Dawn. Billy Zane is great in it and just brings a ton of personally to the film. I even really dug the raunchy, meta-horror opening.
(1994) The Mask 7/10
Jim Carrey is his usual, hilarious, eclectic, over-the-goddamn-top self which softens the edges. There’s also a villain though and the same childish aspects don’t apply to him. As a kid, he was kind of scary actually.
(1993) Jurassic Park 9.5/10
Even just typing that title blows my mind, this movie was made in 1993 and 27 years later, it still looks better than most modern monster movies. Jurassic Park is everything. This movie is the perfect blend of horror, action, adventure and sci-fi.
(1991) Highway to Hell 7.5/10
This is an absolutely awesome 90’s horror movie. It has cameos from the entire Stiller family, even fucking Gilbert Gottfried. You also have Chad Lowe, who I truthfully didn’t even know existed. The story, set pieces and script are also all excellent. It’s darkly funny, well-paced and just a wild ride from start to finish.
(1990) The Exorcist 3 8.5/10
This movie, for a film following such an iconic movie, being a third film in a series, is just bafflingly good. The original writer of the first film is returning and his script as well as directorial product both deliver.
(1989) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 8/10
Indy is still Indy here, he’s fucking badass; his character and dialogue excel in this entry immensely. Not just dialogue but this film contains some of the best action choreography of the entire series, something that almost seems unfairly diminished through repetition. This movie is fucking awesome.
(1988) Akira 7.5/10
This story is one that would feel very difficult to pull off through traditional media. The level of violence and body horror would possibly be even too much for Cronenberg’s plate. The ending of this film is mind-melting.
(1988) Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 7.5/10
It’s violent, dark, disgusting and gory as fuck. It feels like a fever dream of hell. I loved the female character kind of forcing this disgusting erotic nature and it doubled down on the series soul which is the deadly allure of hell.
(1988) Vampire’s Kiss 7/10
I love American Psycho and watching this, I can see where a ton of the performance inspiration in that film came from. Cage’s body language here is so insanely expressive and probably my favorite part of the entire project. Even if you’ve seen this one before, I highly suggest a re-watch, there’s something special about it.
(1987) Fatal Attraction 7.5/10
Holy shit Glenn Close you goddamn crazy bitch, such a great performance. This movie is so incredibly and exponentially tense as it plays out. I loved Micheal Douglas and the entire film is just a reminder to never fucking cheat.
(1987) The Believers 7/10
It gets a bit absurd at certain points but the cult aspects are awesome. I also think it’s the first horror movie I’ve seen specifically about Santeria. It’s not perfect but it stuck with me.
(1987) The Lost Boys 8/10
Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys is so indicative of 80’s horror that it could very well be the face of the decade itself. The one-liners, the practical effects, aesthetics and story are all just wonderful. I’m not sure what else to say, this movie feels like a warm blanket to me.
(1986) Little Shop of Horrors 8/10
Rick Moranis is as goofy as ever and good god…the practical effects are mind-blowing. You’re watching this giant plant movie and it just melts your brain thinking about how it was accomplished.
(1986) Aliens 7/10
They exploited the action of the first film to capture a larger audience and lost what made Alien such an effective horror movie in the first place. I still like this movie because it contains my favorite heroin and monster but I’m sick of acting like the Alien series ever needed a director like Cameron. The ending is absolutely insane and bumps this up a few points for sure.
(1984) The Terminator 8/10
This movie, simply put, is badass as shit. I’m aware the series kind of progresses into more action focused territory with the sequels but the original will always be a horror movie to me. The pacing, the unstoppable force that is Arnold, it’s all thrilling as shit.
(1984) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 8/10
I think it’s a scary movie and a really dark turn in the trilogy. There are quirky aspects of it character wise that are kind of goofy but playful. Overall though, goddamn dude, these set pieces are amazing.
(1984) Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter 7/10
Jason is super fucking powerful here; he moves quickly, intelligently and is able to drive the suspense of the movie. The success is greatly attributed to a solid performance by Crispin Glover but more importantly, Corey Feldman. I know Corey gets a lot of shit these days but he was an eclectic child actor.
(1981) Raiders of the Lost Ark 9/10
Raiders of the Lost Arc is such an important movie to me. It helped open my eyes to darker content as a child, for better or worse. Everything that could ever be said about this film has been said, I’m just here to show my appreciation.
(1980) City of the Living Dead 8/10
This movie is batshit insane in the best way possible. It’s ultra-gory, tons of crazy impressive practical effects which are very much Fulci in style. The narrative is a bit confusing but I think, or hope at least, intentionally so.
(1980) The Ninth Configuration 7/10
The Ninth Configuration, while still representing William Peter Blatty’s struggle with religion, is tonally very different from The Exorcist. It’s a tedious, slow, detail oriented, character driven film that exceeds so well because of great writing.
(1979) Nosferatu the Vampire 8/10
This film not only embodies and celebrates the original in terms of structure as well as substance, but in its restrained filmmaking methods; its ability to let shots live without intervention. It’s atmospheric, well-trimmed and just an all-around, exceptional film. Klaus Kinsi as Nosferatu is perfect.
(1979) The Amityville Horror 7/10
I like James Brolin’s character, he’s odd and the axe sharpening is somewhat iconic. The film has both pacing issues as well as dialogue issues. With that being said though, the finale in sinister as fuck and really brings life, quite literally, to this evil house.
(1979) Alien 9.5/10
My love for this single film transcends my love for the genre itself. Ridley Scott pulled off an absolute masterpiece and despite having watched it 25 times, I still cannot comprehend how a film of this quality was pulled off in 1979. It’s as close as perfection can be.
(1978) Dawn of the Dead 8/10
Obviously at first glance you can tell this is a really lengthy film at over 2-hours long. However, the pacing is actually my favorite part. Romero really builds up to the climax slowly and lets you linger in his world for such a long time that it becomes fleshed out through pure exposure.
(1978) Slave to the Cannibal God 7/10
I love the visuals, the story and Ursula Andress’ great big dirty milkers. It’s a wonderful, sleazy little exploitation film. The audio is also fantastic; I just love the way this film is edited all around.
(1977) Shock Waves 7/10
Peter Cushing is awesome and I really liked Brooke Adams as well. Despite the cheesy premise though, this film is dark and moody. The tension and action really builds throughout the film and with the atmospheric nature, you kind of forget the ridiculousness of it all.
(1975) Satanico Pandemonium 7/10
This is a pretty great, atmospheric, old-school exploitation film. It dives right into the temptations of sex and the devil among this convent. It gets pretty fucking dark, especially for the time period, specifically for Mexican horror.
(1974) Vampyres 9/10
It’s dark, moody, sexy and offers one of the most unique vampire film experiences to date. It’s a film that makes Dennis’ idea from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia about a full-penetration, Dolph Lundgren crime fighting movie seem almost plausible.
(1973) Soylent Green 8/10
I loved all the concepts and details in this film. It took me a bit to get invested but once I was, real food was replaced with gold in my brain watching the plot play out. Charlton Heston did a great job of bringing life to this fictional universe as well through his dynamic and invested performance.
(1973) The Crazies 7/10
There’s this great scene with this old lady knitting that I just adore. The innocent and violent clash in such an effective way. Obviously the horror aspects in that scene, as well as the virus itself are very fictional. The government response though, seems almost plausible, considering how they’re currently handling Covid-19.
(1972) Horror Express 8/10
It’s genuinely creepy to this day and the storyline is ambitious as fuck. I’d be hard-pressed to say it’s not one of the better horror-sci-fis of the 70’s and that category includes some great fucking films.
(1968) Even the Wind is Afraid 8/10
Coming over a decade before Suspiria, I can’t but feel, despite how unknown this film is, how influential it was to the genre. The story is great; it’s not super violent or anything and when they do show anything, it’s so well built up. It’s either a reveal at either peak tension or the opposite, when it’s least expected.
(1967) Our Mother’s House 8/10
Jack Clayton, simply for directing The Innocents, is one of my favorite directors. He manages to capture super poignant emotional moments unlike no one else. We have some great modern directors working today that do the same but in terms of 1960's horror, it was harder to come by.
(1967) Violated Angels 7/10
It’s actually based on an American case, about a man Richard Speck who broke into a hospital in 1966, raped and murdered eight nurses. The cinematography is startling cold. The dialogue is profound and helpless. This has to be up there with the most cynically sexualized piece of exploitation cinema.
(1964) Lady in a Cage 7.5/10
It’s a really great little thriller with a solid performance by Olivia de Havilland and also James Caan. I think this movie captures such a helpless nature really well.
(1964) The Last Man on Earth 7.5/10
I loved this movie. It’s actually one of my favorite Price films, which at least for me, is a bold statement. His films tend to have this warm, campy feel to them but this one actually felt pretty dark and desolate. It still contains those less-serious scenes and bits of dialogue but the writing and ideas themselves feel like a huge leap forward for the horror genre.
(1960) The Virgin Spring 9/10
This is clearly the inspiration for The Last House on the Left and while I appreciate that film immensely, it didn’t evoke the same emotions this one did. The cinematography, per-Bergman, is impeccable.
(1958) The Fly 7.5/10
The plot is actually non-linear and the first half is my favorite. Patricia Owens plays up the paranoia of her character incredibly well and I was actually really happy to see Price in a supporting role.
(1956) Forbidden Planet 8/10
I personally think it’s one of the best sci-fi films of the decade. I know I’m going to get chirped for saying this but there’s even a scene towards the end that I believe could have inspired the tesseract in Interstellar.
(1935) The Black Room 7/10
This is another Universal horror film starring Karloff, directed by Roy Neill. It presents itself with the usual, tight-knit flair you may have come to expect but it somehow has seen much less recognition than any of the major monster movies. I really liked this movie.
(1932) The Old Dark House 8/10
This is also Karloff’s best look to date. I mean seriously, his performance is pretty muted and mostly expressed in body language but he has the same screen presence as Mickey Rourke.

In honor of the 8 minutes that Deep Blue Sea dedicates to people opening and closing doors, I decided to rank the 39 moments involving doors in the film.

In honor of the 8 minutes that Deep Blue Sea dedicates to people opening and closing doors, I decided to rank the 39 moments involving doors in the film.
I love Deep Blue Sea, and think it is a perfect popcorn film that features creative deaths, lots of surprises, and the best kitchen fight ever (that isn’t in The Raid 2 or Sudden Death). It makes me happy that Wired, Bloody Disgusting, and Deep Blue Sea - The Podcast (check it out, it covers everything DBS), have been praising its brilliance lately. After watching the film again, and realizing that the characters spend a little over eight minutes opening and closing doors it felt right to rank every moment that features a door opening or closing. Some of the best moments in the film feature doors, and after watching DBS for the 700th time, I decided to log every moment, and rank them in a very subjective manner (I included locker doors, cabinet doors and medicine chest doors).

So many door moments
Here’s the cast and trailer for reference
  • Saffron Burrows as Dr. Susan McCallister
  • Thomas Jane as Carter Blake
  • LL Cool J as Sherman "Preacher" Dudley
  • Jacqueline McKenzie as Janice "Jan" Higgins
  • Michael Rapaport as Tom Scoggins
  • Stellan Skarsgård as Dr. Jim Whitlock
  • Aida Turturro as Brenda Kerns
  • Samuel L. Jackson as Russell Franklin
The list starts with the least impressive (but still awesome) door moments.
  1. Sherman “Preacher” Dudley takes his cake out of the oven, and kicks the oven door shut (it’s slick) - I have this in last place because it always reminds me of the deleted subplot involving Preacher and Tom Scoggins arguing over cake. I want a world that features LL Cool J and Michael Rapaport arguing about cake.
  2. Scoggins opens up some closet doors looking for batteries for his flashlights.
  3. Carter Blake opens up a medicine cabinet door to grab some gauze for his burnt arm. It’s industrious, but not memorable.
  4. McAlester opens up her lab door after she kills the shark. The scene works well because of the urgency of Carter Blake and the shocked look on McAlester's face.
  5. Random extras open up a gate to get to the boat that's taking them away from the Aquatica for the weekend. It’s A+ plus extra work because they weren’t walking like extras normally do in movies (like they’ve lost all motor functions).
  6. Janice Higgins opens a door to greet McAlester and Russell Franklin. It's a totally fine moment.
  7. Preacher enters the kitchen via the swinging doors while being chased by the shark. There’s nothing wrong with this scene, it’s just that opening a door in water is kind of boring as it closes slowly (more on this later).
  8. Carter opens up the Wet Lab door and swims in. I’d rank this higher, but since the door was already open, and all he had to do was open it more, I couldn’t justify a higher ranking.
  9. Carter opens a chain link fence door to check out the tiger shark that was just delivered. The Walt Conti designed sharks are amazing btw.
  10. An extra closes the plane door after Susan McAlester exits it - The door close is solid, there’s just nothing spectacular about it.
  11. McAlester opens the metal fence - It’s kinda cool because it shows there is a lock on the door, and thus the place is kind of like a prison (Alcatraz floats).
  12. The crew walk into Janice’s room - This is interesting because we actually get to see someone’s living quarters. She has a fish tank, I feel bad for the fish….
  13. The crew enter the wet entry (before Russell is killed) - I enjoy the casualness of the door opening.
  14. The elevator door closes after they attach Jim to the helicopter - It’s a good shot, I like the use of the widescreen aspect ratio. However, after the crew got wiped out by water (on set accident), the door closing is anticlimactic.

https://preview.redd.it/dsoqg962r9561.jpg?width=275&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=490f185438e37fd1269f3c128a449fa0e339d780
  1. Opening of the door to avoid the flooding from the wet lab - This happens after the shark bashes the giant glass with Jim. It’s a good moment, but I’m 175% certain the water would’ve rushed in faster.
  2. The makeshift rope is pulled inside the door, and it’s closed - This moment is memorable because of how long the makeshift rope is. Preacher must’ve taken a long time to make it. Also, the shark could’ve killed everyone during the construction of the rope, and chose not to so it could continue to herd the humans. Also, later on, Carter doesn’t even bother using the rope.

https://preview.redd.it/ctr8cf45r9561.jpg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2322cfa6546b221ccb09cc784e6d7421a3df935e
  1. Carter, McAlester and Preacher enter the escape hatch room. I love the spinning handle on the door.
  2. Elevator door opens, and McAester slowly walks out when she’s called to the surface level - I like the “scary” vibe and camerawork.
  3. McAlester locks herself in her office while looking for her research. I like the idea of her locking herself in her office - while the shark is waiting for her.
  4. The Wet Entry doors open and Carter jumps into the water. Dude is a maniac.

https://preview.redd.it/a6zgp6s7r9561.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a6cde4d41ec04e97c684d043c9eda5ce128e031
  1. Russell sees the Wet Lab for the first time - It’s a nice door opening that leads to something nice (which is rare for DBS).
  2. Janice closes the fence door and it locks - I love the look that Russell Franklin gives the locked fence door. Do they think the sharks could walk out of the place? Are the locks there to prevent pirates from entering?

https://preview.redd.it/g3b6ba3ar9561.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=57177dde2071cc346eed2bdbb752af0d6c5c541c
  1. The remaining survivors open the Wet Entry door after Russell Franklin is eaten. I love the delayed water explosion.

https://preview.redd.it/r6q3pktcr9561.png?width=987&format=png&auto=webp&s=e971b0e3f24d44c687b741a2e69674fd701d34e6
  1. McAlester exits a helicopter on her way to talk to Russell Franklin. I love a confident helicopter exit. She also doesn’t bother closing the door - which is legit
  2. Preacher, McAlester and Blake swim though the escape hatch door to face the sharks (1:20 in clip) - It’s suspenseful, but it’s overshadowed by Preacher’s prayer. You barely remember that a door was opened.
  3. Carter pries open the door to level 2 to prevent the elevator shaft from flooding (:30 in clip). I love a scene involving a door being pried open. Bonus points for the following moments when the shark doesn’t even try to eat him, because he’s needed to open more doors.

https://preview.redd.it/jyzpazlhr9561.png?width=753&format=png&auto=webp&s=9553a0be029b360fa2610c1cdb3f879f53240a3e
  1. The Gen 2 shark knocks open the door to the elevator shaft (Beginning of clip). I love the shark vision leading up to the door smash.

https://preview.redd.it/wn6vr38nr9561.png?width=804&format=png&auto=webp&s=d39444d09fa14ed504764c4266ba9beaf409f9f5
  1. Preacher exits the flooded kitchen door, then says “You ate my bird.” (1:45 in clip) - The door opening isn’t exciting, however, the shark explosion is fun

https://preview.redd.it/kmw39iupr9561.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=245f289554fa319d9fc9b19ba9dd15373f059183
11. Preacher escapes through the top oven door (1:20 in clip) - It’s a lot of fun watching the chef escape the oven (that the shark turned on).

https://preview.redd.it/mh1ty9psr9561.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4686882a2b7fc31f5a8811e567a1536e3ed666c9
  1. The extras leave the Aquatica and get on a boat - I like how they hold the door open for each other. It’s a pleasant moment. Are they dancing on the boat because they are a fun crew, or are they happy that they are leaving?
  2. McAlester opens up her locker door, and the shark learns where she gets her research - This is important later on, when the shark is waiting for her.
  3. The crew take Whitlock up to the surface, and there is a massive storm. I like seeing all the waves blasting around them.
  4. The shark has Carter open a door after Scoggins is eaten. It’s neat seeing Carter’s head fly back and as he is sucked into the other corridor. The sharks are so smart.
6. The group uses teamwork to get out of the wet lab after it is flooded (2:18 in clip - you’ll also see a great Carter Blake slip). It’s nice seeing everyone work together.

https://preview.redd.it/yu24bqzur9561.png?width=672&format=png&auto=webp&s=b59f5177ce88778d58118c9274ed4aa6290b4cf9
  1. McAlester opens up her locker door, grabs her research, and the shark attacks. I love that the shark was sitting in her room, waiting for her to grab her research.

https://preview.redd.it/cnf3mupyr9561.jpg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c38c84f926bbf334de1b7b3fe0bf5d38af656556
4. Carter opens up the pen door so he can dart the Gen. 2 shark (:30 in clip). It’s freaky watching him swim out into the dark water. It’s neat knowing that the Gen. 2 shark allowed Carter to dart it.

https://preview.redd.it/3n09l3b1s9561.png?width=788&format=png&auto=webp&s=bff7fcbc206c7d18006526a9149f97b829855d8a
  1. You think that another shark is trying to bash its way into the elevator shaft, BUT, it’s Preacher coming to save the day. It’s a nice moment.
  2. Preacher opens and closes the oven door when he’s trying to not become shark food. I love the idea of him climbing into the oven.
1. The Gen. 2 shark sneaks into the flooded kitchen (:20 in clip) while Preacher is climbing on some cabinets. This isn’t exactly exciting, I just love how stealthy the shark is. It makes me laugh that the large shark is able to sneakily get into the kitchen while Preacher isn't looking. It's super cheeky.

Rewriting Titans Tv Show Part 1: Season 1

Yeah I’m surprised there isn’t enough people doing this, the titans show was a big disappointment even after the bad trailers I expected it to be somewhat decent but it’s just terrible. The first season is a mix bag with some decent episodes and character arcs however they lead to nothing and season 2 was awful. So I’ll just do what I think the entire show should’ve been in the first place, I don’t know what the writers have in mind for season 3 or even the series finale but I have an idea. But first I’ll do some recasting, Dick Grayson will not be 27 or 28 years old like in the original version, he will be younger like 23. So just cast a younger actor I don’t know but simply one that isn’t a complete adult. Star Fire will also be played by a different actress I would cast Kat McNamara she played Oliver Queens daughter in Arrow. I would also cast an older actress to play Raven. Beast boy would stay the same and I would add cyborg to the team, he would be played by the same actor in Doom Patrol.
•SEASON 1
1x01: Robin
The show begins with a 15 year dick Grayson driving a car he is supposedly looking for his parents murderer. This was a scene in the show already in a flashback where it’s revealed he will be adopted by Bruce Wayne, then in the present we have the same scene where Robin fights a group of criminals, however he will not kill and he isn’t as violent as the original show depicted him but he will say “fuck Batman”. After that scene we just show that his working as a bartender not a cop but a bartender in Detroit. The main plot of the episode will be Amanda Waller will contact Grayson to hijack a secret HIVE place where they’re supposedly experimenting on children, Robin at the beginning says no but since Batman can’t do it cause he has being emotionally compromised and Amanda doesn’t trust he’ll do the job. (That will be explained in another episode), the point is Robin agrees, he sneaks in and gets surrounded by HIVE agents and Raven appears kills a bunch of them and saves Grayson that’s where the episode ends.
1x02: Raven
In this episode we see basically the same scenes of Raven as in the original show, she leaves with her mom, gets bullied, comes home and a man kills her mom, she leaves, she has nightmares of Dick Grayson, she goes to Detroit, HIVE is hunting her, at the end they catch her, experiment on her and she manages to escape, she finds Robin, they both meet they keep going until they see a green tiger come out of a jail cell turning into Gar.
1x03: Beast Boy
Basically the first few episodes will be episodic introductions to each titans member explaining their origins. However in beast boys episode we won’t see the doom patrol just him and his family in Africa until his found by HIVE that experiments on him after his mutation when they try to cure him. We will also meet Sebastian Blood in this episode where he talks to Gar about why they’re experimenting on him, he also mentions the church of Blood and Trigon.
1x04: Cyborg
This one we will see Cyborgs origin and his father works in HIVE, at the end of the episode Cyborg is with his father when an alarm system goes off and he realizes that he isn’t the one being experimented on so he goes outside and helps, Robin, Raven and Gar. Sebastian Blood tells his people to release star fire from captivity.
1x05: StarFire
This episode will be about both Amanda Waller and HIVE hunting down Starfire after she arrives to earth, we will se Star simply discovering earth for the first time until she gets captured by HIVE and taken captive untold they release her to catch Robin, Cyborg and Raven. It is revealed that she wanted to kill the daughter of Trigon to be able to go back to her people but she couldn’t do it cause Raven is just a young girl so she decides to help them. Raven will also find out in this episode who she really is.
1x06: Together
This one will be similar to one in the show where they stay in a motel but Kory and Robin won’t have sex, they will get hunted by the nuclear family etc. At the end Robin will fight against a group of assassins until Tim Drake Sabra him. Yes Tim drake not Jason Todd.
1x07: A Tale of Two Robins
This episode will be the same as “Jason Todd 1x06” from the original show. Instead of Jason it’s Tim Drake. Dick will have flashbacks of Jason Todd, it turns out that two years after Bruce adopted Dick he also adopted Jason Todd, Dick and Grayson where both Robins until Jason died. Tim didn’t know about Jason at all. Apart from that the rest of the episode goes pretty much the same way.
1x08: The Beast Within
In this episode the main focus is on Beast Boy, he has been struggling with his powers and how he murdered a few scientist when he was being experimented, he will unlock the beast he will go full hulk and the titans have to stop him. They obviously do thanks to Raven who used her powers to calm him.
1x09: Homesick
Starfire will be struggling with her powers cause she’s sad about her home. Here it is revealed a little bit more of her backstory and she was sent to kill Raven daughter of Trigon, but she couldn’t do it. We will also see a hologram of Blackfire telling her to return and she will say no, the rest of the episode is mostly about that meanwhile Cyborg goes with his father who needs his help getting rid of HIVE who wants him to help Sebastian Blood kidnap the titans, Cyborg will feel betrayed he will try and warn the titans but ya too late. Red X appears at the end of the episode being told by Sebastian Blood to take down all the titans.
1x10: Red X
So yeah Red X is the villain this season along with Sebastian Blood. This episode is basically just Red X taking down the titans one by one, first beast boy, then Raven then Star fire and that’s it, Robin is the only one that gets away and Amanda Waller will help him stop Sebastian Blood.
1x11: Titans
The main purpose of Sebastian Blood is similar to the animated movie The Judas contract when Sebastian blood wants to to absorb titans powers. When Robin and Amanda Waller’s agents come to save them, along with Tim Drake. Titans fight with the church of Blood and Sebastian blood is burned presumed dead. The ending is Red X captured Tim Drake and reveals his Jason Todd
1x12: Jason Todd
This will be the final episode of the season where Jason has captured Tim Drake and has bombs around Gotham City. Robin asks for Bruce Wayne’s help, in my version Bruce Wayne should be played by someone way younger he should be in his 40s. Alfred is still alive. Batman works with the teen titans to find the bombs while Robin looks for red x, now in this episode there will be flashbacks to how Jason died, and instead of Joker killing him is was Ravager aka, Grant Wilson, Red X first mentions that he will get revenge on Gotham and then he will go for ravager. Robin and Red X fight, Robin wins, red x explodes the building and he escapes. The rest of the titans save the city and Tim drake survives.
The last scene is Bruce apologizing to Dick for pushing him away, basically after Jasons death Bruce pushed him away that made Robin go away, he also looked for Tim as a replacement but so far his done a pretty good job as Robin. Dick tells Bruce about forming a team with his friends that have nowhere else to go, and he wants a new superhero costume and name. The ending is titans arriving at the tower.

After several viewings of Con Air that involved strategic pausing and staring way too closely at the TV, I came up with two Con Air seating charts. The first is for the Oakland Airport convicts, and the second is for the Carson City convicts.
I'm a big fan of Con Air. It's an insane B-movie with an A-list cast, and It's loaded with memorable moments, bunny fights, and glorious hair. Also, Nic Cage throws a beautiful spin kick, which blows my mind every time I see it. During a recording of Deep Blue Sea - The Podcast, a guest said putting a seating chart together was nearly impossible - so, I decided to give it a shot. Getting the seating chart 100% correct was a bumpy ride, and I was completely flummoxed by a couple of the character names. So, I reached out to Con Air actors Ty Granderson Jones (Blade) and Conrad Goode (Viking), and they helped me with the finishing touches (Thank you again!).
Here's the Con Air seating chart! I hope you enjoy.

What will be the next comic book film to get a BP nomination?

So the Academy completely changed the game when Black Panther and Joker were nominated for Best Picture, the first comic book films to do so. That does lead me to another question though: which film could be next? It’s extremely unlikely any comic book films from 2020 will get nominated for Best Picture (Birds of Prey, Bloodshot, The New Mutants and Wonder Woman 1984 are… putting it generously, “Not awards material”). I’ve decided to look at all comic book films coming out in the foreseeable future to judge their chances of BP nominations based on “Extremely Possible”, “Somewhat Possible”, “Not Very Possible” and “Impossible”.
Black Widow - Not Very Possible
This is an action Mission Impossible type movie. It could have a slim path if it has enough girl power messages to gain hype, but considering Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman couldn’t achieve that, Black Widow’s path is a HUGE long shot.
The Suicide Squad - Not Very Possible
This is being billed as a crazy, action war movie. The premise sounds interesting, but not really awards material. Still, if the movie is really good, it is possible. Especially since the first Suicide Squad won an Oscar despite dreadful reviews. Big long shot though.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - Somewhat Possible
An action homage to Bruce Lee doesn’t really scream “Oscar bait”, but Shang-Chi is likely to make headlines for its Asian-American representation. If the film is hyped up enough, it could have the same cultural impact Black Panther did.
Untitled Spider-Man: Far From Home Sequel - Not Very Possible
The Spider-Man franchise has never been awards friendly. Some movies have done modestly well, Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse both won Oscars, but the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies have been less than memorable, despite positive reviews. Still, if the film is as big of an event as people have built it up to be (rumors now suggest Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield could be making an appearance) it could have a slim path if it dominates the conversation for months and gets relatively possible reviews. Still, considering the Avengers movies couldn’t ride a hype wave to nominations, it’s unlikely Spider-Man will be able to either.
Black Adam - Impossible
The film looks like another goofy Dwayne Johnson film. Not the type of film that will be getting Oscar hype.
The Eternals - Extremely Possible
With Nomadland writer and director Chloe Zhao at the helm, The Eternals is being billed as something out of the ordinary for Marvel. This has as good a shot of any film of getting a nomination if the film truly is great.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage - Impossible
As shocking as it may be to hear, the sequel to the critically acclaimed Venom is unlikely to get hype. Perhaps Eminem will get a Best Original Song Nomination for another Venom rap.
The Batman - Extremely Possible
The hype for this film is REAL. If the movie is unlike your traditional comic book film, and gets possible reviews, there’s nothing stopping The Batman from getting a Best Picture nomination.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness - Not Very Possible
The first Doctor Strange was typical for action films. While the second film is rumored to be something more, it’s unlikely the film will be mainstream enough for the Academy’s tastes.
Black Panther 2 - Extremely Possible
Not only did the first Black Panther get a nomination, but this one is rumored to be an emotional tribute to Chadwick Boseman. This screams Oscar potential.
Untitled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Sequel - Somewhat Possible
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a surprise hit with early critic circles. Still, the movie failed to become the fourth animated film to get a BP nomination. In spite of that, the film did beat Pixar’s The Incredibles 2 and Disney’s Wreck It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks The Internet to win Best Animated Feature, an achievement on its own. It is possible Black Panther’s nomination deterred voters from voting for Spider-Verse (why would they want to nominate two comic book films in the same year). If it doesn’t face any competition, and it’s as big a hit, or a bigger hit than the first film, it’s possible.
Untitled Aquaman Sequel - Impossible
Goofball action films don’t fly in the face of Academy voters.
Thor: Love and Thunder - Somewhat Possible
On the surface, Thor: Love and Thunder seems like a big long shot, since Thor: Ragnorok didn’t strike lightning in a bottle (pun intended) with Oscar voters. However, since then, director Taika Waititi has become a bigger name, especially with awards voters. If the film is a big hit, there’s no reason the film can’t succeed.
The Flash - Not Very Likely
While it is billed a big event, with Ben Affleck’s Batman and Micheal Keaton’s Batman returning to team up, but it’s more likely to appeal to fanboys than critics.
Shazam: Fury of the Gods - Impossible
Even if reviews are stellar, Shazam is too small of a franchise to even gain grassroots Oscar attention.
Untitled Captain Marvel Sequel - Not Very Likely
While a diverse cast could make an impact, the first Captain Marvel was too polarizing with audiences, and not good enough for critics to make a sustainable franchise for Oscar voters.
For those wondering, I’m not even going to talk about Zack Snyder’s Justice League because it’s being released as a series, and is therefore more likely to qualify for Emmys (though it likely won’t).

All 19 upcoming TV shows based on DC comics!

I know this is a long post, and it took me a lot of time to write, so I hope you will show this some love. If you are not a fan of reading this much, you can watch it in video format on our newly started YouTube channel: The link to the video is: https://youtu.be/-e3Vy4G92A8 If you decide to watch this, please do not forget to like the video and subscribe to our channel for more such content! We are looking for some love and support from fellow comics lovers to grow.
With all of the great DC TV shows that are currently on the air, it seems to take the strength of a Kryptonian to follow everything, and I am not just talking about the infinite number of storylines concurrently existing within the Arrowverse. Of course, that being, how many people do you know who can say they have seen every episode of Doom Patrol as well as The Flash? However, what really concerns me, especially these days, is keeping track of the upcoming release dates for these series.
Just keeping tabs on the premiere dates of these extremely popular TV shows alone would normally be a much simpler task, yet, with halts in production in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak and other behind-the-scenes blunders, there is no telling when any of these series are scheduled to return or even if they are destined to return at all. In hopes to give fans at least some explanation of what to expect, we are taking a closer look at the current status of all of your favorite TV shows ripped from the pages of DC Comics, and some you have yet to see.
The following is a comprehensive one-stop-shop of what, when, and where you can expect the next (or first) chapter of the best DC-inspired shows to unfold on TV or on various digital platforms. All the release dates of these series are subject to change so be sure to check us out on our Instagram page for any updates. The link is given below!
With gritty shows like Titans, obscure-but-refreshing series like Doom Patrol, and impactful limited dramas like Watchmen, DC has become a powerhouse for bringing comic book characters to TV. Despite Marvel has had success with several shows, DC TV (via the Arrowverse primarily) has still been ruling the game for almost a full decade. However, as the brand is getting closer to celebrating its decade-long run, Warner Bros. is entering a new phase for how to make DC TV shows across their platforms.
There's already a long list of DC TV shows currently on the air, and that list will only get bigger in the near future. Several more shows set in the world of DC Comics are on their way from The CW as well as streaming services HBO Max and DC Universe. Soon, DC Comics will have most of its biggest characters represented on the small screen at once.
The biggest corner of DC TV is of course the Arrowverse on The CW, which consists of Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and Batwoman. Together, the five interconnected shows are packed with popular and obscure heroes and villains from the DC Universe - but those aren't the only DC shows from that network, of course. The series that started it all, Arrow, is over after the conclusion of its 10-episode eighth season, but that doesn't mean the Arrowverse is going to start shrinking. The CW still has more in the pipeline. DC Universe's live-action universe kicked off with Titans and grew to include Doom Patrol and the Swamp Thing series. DC Universe does have other projects still in the works, as does HBO Max. Here are all the upcoming TV shows based on characters from DC Comics across all major platforms, along with their release dates.
1. Pennyworth, Season 2: Epix in December 2020
Not long after Gotham, the Fox hit following the rise of the city’s greatest supervillains during Bruce Wayne’s childhood, went off the air, fans craving even more Batman prequel series were treated with this show following Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon) as 1960s special forces soldier years before working as the Waynes’ live-in servant. The critically acclaimed, thrilling period drama, Pennyworth has been renewed for a second season of Epix.
2. Batwoman, Season 2: The CW on 17th January 2021
The biggest changes to the Arrowverse will be seen on Batwoman, whose lead actress, Ruby Rose, chose to leave the series after just one year playing LGBTQ+ comic book icon Kate Kane. The decision came after surgery for an on-set injury caused the already demanding role to become especially challenging for the former Orange Is the New Black star. The second season, airing on The CW in January 2021, will introduce Javicia Leslie as the titular vigilante, becoming the first black actress to play the role.
3. Black Lightning, Season 4: The CW on February 8, 2021.
Speaking of lightning, the Arrowverse debuted its first series led by a black superhero in 2017, following the adventures of a school principal with a plethora of bio-electric abilities, and its most “electrifying” season yet is on its way. Black Lightning, starring Cress Williams as the aging titular superhero who comes out of retirement per his daughter’s inspiration, will see its Season 4 debut on The CW in February 2021.
4. The Flash, Season 7: The CW on February 23, 2021.
The first spin-off and second building block of the Arrowverse’s construction, in which a young forensic scientist working for the Central City Police Department gains the power of super speed after a fateful lightning strike, was renewed for a seventh season in early 2020. Grant Gustin is set to return in the title role of The Flash, which has been the highest-rated series on The CW since its 2014 debut, to reveal the answers to fans’ most pressing questions in February 2021.
5. Superman & Lois, Season 1: The CW February 23, 2021
The series premiere of Superman & Lois hits The CW in February 2021. Hoechlin's Superman first appeared in Supergirl season 2, and Lois Lane was introduced to the Arrowverse in last year's Elseworlds crossover. The show will see DC Comics' most popular power couple navigate through their new lives as working parents. Superman & Lois will be the first live-action series about Clark Kent since Smallville.
6. Supergirl, Season 6: The CW, spring of 2021
Originally debuting on CBS before it joined her Arrowverse family at their home on The CW, Melissa Benoist’s run as the tough as nails Kara Danvers (Clark Kent’s cousin) has been a success of Kryptonian proportions. There is no confirmation for when Supergirl, and Benoist’s improved costume from Season 5, will return for its sixth season, but it is expected to premiere sometime in spring of 2021.
7. Titans, Season 3: HBO Max, spring of 2021
After a stunning first two seasons of intense thrills and stunning twists on the digital platform DC Universe, Titans will have the more recently launched HBO Max to call home for its third season. Despite facing a long delay in production, the series, following a group of younger vigilantes has been renewed, but without a set premiere date at the moment.
The team of teenaged superheroes includes Batman’s former partner Robin (now Nightwing), the shape-changing Beast Boy, the mystical Raven, and the energy powered Starfire. The team battled a number of enemies in its first season. They were joined by other supporting characters from the comics, including Hawk and Dove, Wonder Girl/Donna Troy, and even Bruce Wayne himself in the second season. If you want to know more about this series, do not forget to check out our video on what’s hot and what’s not with DC’s Titans.
8. Legends Of Tomorrow, Season 6: The CW in summer of 2021
The Arrowverse installment with the most versatility (on account of its dizzying rotation of different locations and time settings) would have to be Legends of Tomorrow. The diverse group of ragtag heroes will continue to embark on more adventures traveling through time to save reality itself from its worst moments in the summer of 2021 for its sixth season on The CW.
9. Stargirl, Season 2: The CW, summer of 2021
Making its debut on The CW in the summer of 2020 was Stargirl, which was also a historical moment for introducing the much-overlooked Justice Society of America (not to be confused with the Justice League, which was actually created later) into the Arrowverse continuity. Stargirl is a series about the teenage superhero of the same name in DC Comics. Courtney Whitmore is a high school student who discovers that her step-father was a sidekick to an actual superhero. After going through his belongings, she finds the Cosmic Staff, a powerful weapon that imbues her with powers. The endearing smash hit, starring Brec Bassinger as the young, but extremely powerful, title heroine, will return for its sophomore outing in the fall of 2021.
10. Peacemaker: HBO Max, August 6, 2021
Peacemaker is another upcoming DC Comics show arriving on HBO Max, based on an upcoming Warner Bros. film. That film is The Suicide Squad, which will feature, among many other folks, John Cena playing the role of Peacemaker. While the movie won’t be out until August 2021, the early behind-the-scenes reaction to this violent superhero was so good, HBO Max commissioned a series centering just on Peacemaker. James Gunn, who wrote and directed The Suicide Squad, will write all of the episodes of Peacemaker, and will also direct the pilot episode.
The latest DC TV show HBO Max announced to be in the works came as a surprise. Gunn has also confirmed that other characters from the film will appear on the show. What Gunn won't confirm is whether this means Peacemaker will survive The Suicide Squad.
11.Zack Snyder’s Justice League: HBO Max on 5 September 2021
This is one of the most anticipated HBO Max original series of all. Co-writer and director Zack Snyder had to leave the production of the live-action Justice League film before it was completed due to a family tragedy. Reshoots and rewrites of the movie were done without his supervision. As a result, the 2017 film released to theaters was not what Snyder had envisioned. After a huge amount of pressure from fans, Warner Bros decided to give Snyder another chance to create his version of the film.
The result will be called Zack Snyder’s Justice League (also known as The Snyder Cut). Lots of stuff that was filmed for the original movie, but was later cut, will be put back in for this version. New visual effects will be added, and even some new live-action scenes will be filmed. This won’t be just a re-edited movie. Zack Snyder’s Justice League will first be shown as four one-hour episodes on HBO Max, before being recut into a massive four-hour film.
12.Young Justice, Season 4: HBO Max, late 2021
Making the transition from its DC Universe home to HBO Max is another series following the adventures of a group of powerful young heroes, but this one is animated. After a long hiatus following its cancellation in 2013, the beloved Young Justice will come back for a fourth season and promises storylines of a more mature nature for the fans who have aged during the series’ absence.
While the first two seasons of this youth-based superteam were first shown on Cartoon Network, the third season debuted on DC Universe in 2019. Now, the fourth season has been greenlighted and it will make its debut as an HBO Max exclusive in 2021.
  1. Green Lantern: HBO Max, late 2021
If you can forget that awful 2011 live-action Green Lantern movie, you might want to get excited about this upcoming DC Comics show on HBO Max. Green Lantern is the “space cop” of the DC Universe. He protects the Earth, and the universe, from cosmic threats. He does this with his green-charged Power Ring, which can create almost any shape or object he desires. Not much is known about the show, other than the fact that Berlanti, the architect of the Arrowverse, says it will be "our biggest DC show ever made". Since numerous heroes have held the mantle of Green Lantern in the comics, it's unclear which character will be the show's protagonist or if it'll focus on the Green Lantern Corps as a whole.
Stargirl showrunner and longtime DC creator Geoff Johns is also working on the 1-hour drama. Currently being referred to as “a Green Lantern inspired series,” the show will span several decades and feature Sinestro as one of the confirmed characters. Additionally, it will explore two specific stories about the Emerald Knights on Earth. With HBO Max aiming the show to debut in 2021, more news will likely emerge throughout the rest of next year.
14. Doom Patrol, Season 3: HBO Max, late 2021
After debuting its first season on DC Universe, and it’s second on both DC Universe and HBO Max, Doom Patrol will return for its third outing in 2021 as an HBO Max exclusive. Centered on the DC superhero team, the series is based largely on the comics run written by Grant Morrison. This team of misfits with superpowers includes Robotman, who has a human brain inside a metal body. There’s also Crazy Jane, who has 64 personalities, each with its own superpower. You can go ahead and watch the first two seasons now on HBO Max. It’s great stuff!
15. Harley Quinn, Season 3: HBO Max, late 2021
One of the best DC Comics shows on HBO Max is an animated series. Harley Quinn is a very R-rated show, featuring the Joker’s popular sidekick. Kaley Cuoco voices the titular anti-hero, as she works alongside her best friend Poison Ivy to fulfill her dream of becoming a member of the Legion of Doom. The series will encompass multiple characters from Batman's rogues' gallery, and even the Caped Crusader himself, voiced by Diedrich Bader. It should be noted that the cartoon is packed with violence and explicit language, so this is not a show for children. After debuting on DC Universe, you can now watch the first two seasons on HBO Max. The third season will make its way onto the service in 2021.
16. Justice League Dark: HBO Max, Late 2021
J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot team are in charge of developing this show for HBO Max. It’s based on the Justice League spin-off comic, featuring a team that battles more supernatural foes. In the comics, the team has included characters like John Constantine, Deadman, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, and even Wonder Woman. There’s no word on which of these characters might appear on the show.
Aside from a planned 2021 premiere date, details are being kept under wrap - including who will be part of the line-up for the HBO Max original. However, similarly to Green Lantern, Justice League Dark will have a movie quality to it as HBO Max content chief Kevin Reilly has confirmed the big production commitment they’re making to these shows. Other than Abrams developing it, no showrunner or writers have been announced. Once more details are officially revealed about the show, it might also give a better picture of what Abrams has in mind for a Justice League Dark universe including shows and films.
17. Strange Adventures: HBO Max, 2021
This series is yet another one that’s produced by Greg Berlanti. Taking its name from one of DC Comics’ classic Silver Age titles, Strange Adventures will be an anthology series featuring a wide range of DC Comics characters. HBO Max will become the home of Strange Adventures. Strange Adventures was a science fiction comic book series that was first released in the 1950s. The comic included stories about heroes like Adam Strange, Animal Man, Atomic Knights, Deadman, Darwin Jones, and Captain Comet. According to creator Greg Berlanti, HBO Max's take on Strange Adventures will cover "cautionary tales from a world where superpowers exist". The series will be comprised of single-episode stories about characters who live in the DC Universe. Adam Strange is said to be involved in some way, but he won't be the Krypton version of the character.
18. Aquaman: King of Atlantis: HBO Max, Early 2022
Not only is James Wan, who directed the 2018 live-action movie adaptation of Aquaman, working on the sequel and developing a Trench spinoff film, but the Australian filmmaker is also executive producing a 3-part animated series for HBO Max titled Aquaman: King of Atlantis. This show will be a three-part animated series that focuses on the undersea superhero. Aimed at kids, the series will focus on Aquaman’s first days on the job as king of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Each episode will have a unique storyline that features Arthur Curry as Atlantis’ greatest protector. The premiere episode will follow Arthur’s first outing as Aquaman with the help of Mera and Vulko. Ocean Master is confirmed to appear in the series as well as “unscrupulous surface dwellers” and “elder evils from beyond time.” No cast has been announced so far but Michael Clear, Rob Hackett, and Sam Register are the showrunners. HBO Max currently has Aquaman: King of Atlantis set to premiere in 2022.
19. The Batman Spinoff Series: HBO Max, March 4, 2022
With Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman being set outside the DCEU, the filmmaker is expanding his universe to HBO Max. Reeves is developing a spinoff series that will follow the Gotham City Police Department. Set during the first year of The Batman’s appearances in Gotham City, it will focus on its police department, as its officers have to deal with the masked vigilante, among other things.
HBO Max has given a series commitment to the Gotham-based drama, which will continue one of the plots The Batman is introducing when it comes out next fall. The story follows the “anatomy of corruption” in Gotham City that Warner Bros. is now telling across multiple platforms, with HBO Max being one of them. This marks the first time the studio has ever done a spinoff from any of their DC movies as a TV series. Similar to Gotham, the show will be set before the events of The Batman. It's likely that HBO Max is targeting a 2022 release date for the spinoff show, a few months after The Batman has hit theatres.

To celebrate reaching 100 DS games, I reviewed every DS game in my collection!

  1. The Legendary Starfy, my first ever DS game and the only game where water levels are fun. Going back to it, it still holds up, but it feels a bit too much like Kirby to me. 9/10
  2. Chrono Trigger, a classic JRPG! An amazing port to the DS combining the best aspects of all the previous ports. 10/10
  3. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, the best Mario RPG I've played. It was creative, fun, and you got to play as Bowser! Little me absolutely adored this game! 10/10
  4. New Super Mario Bros, a wonderful game at the time and the second DS game I ever owned. Was the first actual sequel we got to Super Mario World on the SNES and was a welcome addition to the Mario franchise! 10/10
  5. Pokemon Platinum, my favorite DS game! Sinnoh region was new, cool, and brought tons of new Pokemon to the table! It was the combination of Diamond and Pearl, just with extra content. 10/10
  6. Pokemon Diamond, the lesser version of Platinum. Still good, but not as amazing as Platinum. 9/10
  7. Pokemon Pearl, just like Diamond, it was the lesser version of Platinum. Let's face it though, Palkia is worse than Dialga. 9/10
  8. Pokemon White, an amazing Pokemon game based in the US! I played this game for hours and was constantly trading online to get the best Pokemon for my party. I will always remember trading a Trubbish for an Arceus! 10/10
  9. Pokemon Black, Reshiram was much worse than Zekrom. However, both Black and White had the same content, just with different legendaries. Gen 5 music rocked as well and I will always jam out to it. 10/10
  10. Pokemon White 2, while the game was fun, I felt it didn't bring enough new content to the table. It was the first ever direct sequel game the Pokemon series ever had, continuing the story from Black and White. I just don't feel it did the best job. 8/10
  11. Pokemon Black 2, I bought this game when it first came out, and similar to my thoughts on White 2, it just didn't bring enough new content. Music was still amazing though! 8/10
  12. Pokemon Heartgold, my first Pokemon game! I always brought my poke walker with me everywhere and I still do to this day! For the nostalgia alone and the hundreds of hours I put in, I have to give this game a 10/10
  13. Pokemon Soulsilver, same as Heartgold just with Lugia. The best thing about HG and SS however, was that you could catch both legendaries no matter which game you had! On my play through of SS, I caught Ho-Oh with a great ball! 10/10
  14. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, despite buying it at launch, I never finished this game. I couldn't handle the repetitive nature and boring combat. The rogue-like genre was never for me, and this was as basic as rogue-like could get. 3/10
  15. The World Ends With You, from the music, to the story, to the gameplay, this game is amazing through and through! The art direction is wonderful as well and the style fits well with the premise. I nearly destroyed my DS beating this game! 10/10
  16. Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, I loved Windwaker. When I saw this game being advertised, I had to pick it up. However, maybe it was my high expectations, but this game was nothing like I expected, and not in a good way. I couldn't get into the story, the controls were iffy, and my heart was broken. 4/10
  17. Radiant Historia, probably one of, if not, the best JRPGs I've ever played! People say Chrono Trigger is the best, but I think this is a worthy contender. I don't want to spoil anything, but the ending left me eager for more! 10/10
  18. Peggle Dual Shot, a fun little arcade game. It got boring and repetitive rather quickly, but it was fun while it lasted. 7/10
  19. Ghost Trick Phantom Detective, one of the best puzzle games on the system! The story was gripping and the graphics really popped out! 100% recommend to everyone, especially puzzle lovers! 10/10
  20. Rhythm Heaven, a super fun rhythm game that most people know by now. The DS version was the first we received in the states, and boy was it worth the wait. The songs, quirky visuals, and addictive gameplay all make for one of the best games on the DS! 10/10
  21. Disgaea DS, a port of a hella difficult PS2 game! Everything has been downgraded, from the graphics to the sounds. You can tell this game was made for a stronger system. Portability is a plus, but it's not enough for me to give it a super high score. 6/10
  22. Etrian Odyssey, a now famous franchise that started on the DS! It is classic dungeon crawling action with tons of characters, classes, and more to choose from! Grinding can be tedious however, and the difficulty spikes will turn some away. A decent experience for anyone willing to put in the time, but not a game for everyone. 7/10
  23. Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard, this game took everything from the previous game and made it better! New classes were made, old classes were balanced out, map making was refined, and much much more. Grinding is still needed, but not nearly as much as before. 8/10
  24. Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City, the ending of this game was horrible and not at all rewarding for the 80+ hours I put in. Just like the previous entry, everything was refined and new additions were made. By far, this game has the best mechanics and classes out of the three. However, the developers really dropped the ball on the aesthetics of the game and nothing sticks out anymore. 6/10
  25. Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, I am not a fan of visual novel games. This game is one of the few exceptions. The story was gripping, the characters were fun, and the suspense nearly killed me at certain points! 10/10
  26. Okamiden, Okami is on my list of favorite games ever created and Okamiden, for the most part, lived up to its predecessor! The world is gorgeous, taking on this traditional Japanese art style. I didn't even know the DS was capable of such graphics! For anyone who loved Okami, this is a must-get. 10/10
  27. Super Scribblenauts, a creative and fun game that's easy to get into and hilarious to play around with! It has its flaws and at times it won't do as you want it to, but for a kids game, it's really good. 9/10
  28. Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals, a controversial remake of a turn-based SNES game. This game was made into a live-action RPG, which one can argue, killed the series. I never played the SNES game, so I can't speak to how accurate of a remake it is, but I rather enjoyed this game! My only gripe is with its integration of other genres. Certain parts of the game included required minigames that had nothing to do with an RPG such as, a rhythm game in a dungeon and a mashing game by some rocks. These minigames completely interrupted the flow of the game and felt like filler. 6/10
  29. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, a brutally difficult JRPG from the beloved SMT series. It is not for casual gaming fans, as you need to gain deep knowledge and grind a ton in order to complete this game. Not a game for everyone, but an amazing game for those who love SMT. 7/10
  30. Sonic Colors, a much better game than the Wii version. This game was the one to introduce wisps into the Sonic universe. The levels were fun and creative, but the bosses were lame and the final boss ended with a mashing game that my younger self could never win. 7/10
  31. Big Bang Mini, an underrated hidden gem on the DS. This game made perfect use of the dual screens and bottom touchscreen! A super fun bullet hell game with a steady increase in difficulty and probably the best credits minigame I've ever seen! 10/10
  32. Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol, a Walmart-exclusive game for the beloved Chibi-Robo series! Sadly, this game not like the Gamecube game that fans loved and was a major letdown in many areas. Still a good game, but not the Chibi-Robo game everyone wanted. 6/10
  33. Chibi-Robo: Clean Sweep, one of the many fan-translated game carts I own! This Japan-exclusive game is everything I wanted out of a Chibi-Robo game! Gameplay is similar to the Gamecube release, with the addition of touchscreen controls, and the story was fun and creative! Loses one point for only coming out in Japan. 9/10
  34. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, pretty much a 3D Pokemon game on the DS but with much more depth in the gameplay. I actually prefer some of the gameplay aspects this game has over Pokemon. The graphics were amazing for a DS game as well and the story, while generic, was much better than most of the Pokemon games I played. It was grindy though, with many enemies not being able to defeat without grinding for at least 30 min. The first time, it was ok, the next few times, it got boring and I had to break up my time grinding into chunks. 8/10
  35. Dragon Quest Monster: Joker 2, just like many other games I've talked about so far, the second game in the series really cleaned up most of the issues in the first! The grindy nature was gone, graphics were amazing as usual, monster designs were creative and badass, but the soundtrack was reused track for track from the first game! Some songs were slightly altered, but most stayed exactly the same and it felt lazy and boring by the time I listed to the same tune, 50 times in a row. The story was even worse than the previous game as well, taking the generic story, and then making it even more generic. Great gameplay, lazy design. 6/10
  36. Retro Game Challenge, a callback to the NES and Atari days! This game is a mashup of all sorts of genres and I love it! The gameplay is creative as well! For example, looking through a magazine to find cheat codes for a specific game. Amazing premise and a perfect game for retro lovers! 10/10
  37. Retro Game Challenge 2, another fan-translation I own! Just like the previous game, this was a major callback to the games of old, this time mashing up even more! I loved every second and I hope to play it again sometime! Loses one point for only coming out in Japan. 9/10
  38. Knights in the Nightmare, the hardest game to learn on the DS. The game was so confusing in fact, that Atlus had to make over an hour long tutorial on Youtube for players to understand just the basics of the game! The game itself is way to challenging as well, making a single mistake possibly game-ending, not just the level, game-ending. Only recommend for people who hate themselves. 6/10
  39. Megaman ZX, a 2D Megaman game like we've seen many times before. It didn't bring anything new to the franchise and didn't even make use of the bottom screen other than showing enemies' health. Felt generic until the end. 4/10
  40. Solatorobo: Red the Hunter, the graphics, soundtrack, story, and gameplay all make this game one of the best on the DS! I adored every second of it and I was begging for more afterwards! Seriously, check out the soundtrack if you can! 10/10
  41. Suikoden Tierkreis, a spinoff of the famous Suikoden series, this game was a classic turn-based JRPG with a gripping story. Difficulty felt a tad bit easy, but not enough to complain about. Nothing was really bad about this game, it just didn't stand out too much. 7/10
  42. Infinite Space, Platinum Games' only DS game. This game had an amazing story but one of the worst battle systems I have ever seen on the DS! It was long, boring, and repetitive. Get this game for the story, not the battles. 6/10
  43. Monster Lab, despite its simplistic nature, this game was really fun back in the day! It doesn't hold up too much now, but I really enjoyed it when it first came out. 100% a kids game, not one for people who know what they're doing. 6/10
  44. Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume, a heartbreaking game where you sometimes have to kill off your party to survive. The story was amazingly dark, combat was new and added to the combat from previous Valkyrie Profile games, and it was super difficult. I had to find many different ways to beat the AI and I lost many times. Some levels felt too luck-based but, the base game was amazing! 9/10
  45. Summon Night: Twin Age, many people in the US don't know about Summon Night and it always saddens me; it's such a good series! Twin Age is no different with its lighthearted nature with serious undertones. Only issues I have are the horrible party AI and fully touchscreen controls. Party AI would leave you stranded and helpless at times while the full touchscreens would only make the controls seem clunky. 7/10
  46. Dementium: The Ward, One of the few horror games on the DS. Many assets were overused but the combat, mood, and more were on point! Everything was creepy and I didn't trust any open room. Even moments of rest were scary! 10/10
  47. Nostalgia, a super fun JRPG based in England, how many JRPG's are based in England? It's a classic JRPG that mixes in fiction with real history. Graphics were decent, story was good, and combat was so much fun! I. especially loved the airship battles which reminded me of Skies of Arcadia. Only gets marked down for not bringing anything new. 8/10
  48. Avalon Code, a JRPG that had so much potential, but fell flat. The story has been seen before, the world is ending, but it is your job to record all the living creatures to have a definitive book of living beings. You can even change up the properties of animals to give you the upper hand in battle. However, the recording and swiping of properties constantly breaks the flow of combat and having to record everything can become very tedious very quickly. 5/10
  49. Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, a spinoff to the well-known series Final Fantasy. This game featured a felt-like art style which stood out from other games at the time. The game was rather difficult and despite the name, you rarely have 4 heroes together at the same time. The story was fun and was nothing like other FF games. Mostly felt like a child version of Final Fantasy, and I loved it! 10/10
  50. Phantasy Star Zero, first off, the graphics are amazing for a DS game! That is sadly, that is one of the only good things I can say about this game. The D-Pad makes it hard to move where you want and the camera never cooperates. Combat is pretty much limited to spamming one button and healing where needed. The game doesn't even pause when opening up the items menu! 3/10
  51. Atelier Annie: Alchemists of Sera Island, a game with a tight deadline. Unlike many other games, you can not play this nonstop. After a year in-game, your journey ends and a new one starts. For some players, this decline will be a dealbreaker, as having to start over might be turn off. Weak story but, it has a very cute premise! 7/10
  52. Fossil Fighters, a monster collection game that requires you to dig up fossils and revive them for your party. Many people compare this to Pokemon, but it really isn't Pokemon at all. You can change where your dinosaurs stand in battle and this changes their stats greatly. It is a little rough around certain areas and there are some balancing issues, but a solid 9/10
  53. Fossil Fighter Champions, a worthy sequel to an already amazing game! I played this game nonstop when it first came out and I can't recommend it enough. It took all the good aspects of Fossil Fighters and made them better. Balancing was fixed and the final boss had me so excited! 10/10
  54. Legend of Kage 2, why did this game need a sequel? Legend of Kage started as a NES game and was not too well received. For some reason though, a sequel was made on the DS. Controls are bad, enemies are just thrown at you, and the same assets are used again and again. The only redeeming qualities are the boss battles and even then, it's bad. My main strategy was to spam attacks and it worked every time. 2/10
  55. Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits, a real-time puzzle game similar to the likes of Tetris. I played Mr. Driller on the PS1 and I adored it even more on the DS. The two screens allow for a wider field of view and this is critical for the game. The addition of minigames allow for a change of pace when the main story gets tiring.
  56. The Dark Spire, a dungeon crawler designed to be way too difficult. This game is exactly like the old dungeon crawler games and is suppose to target the nostalgia people have for those games. Sadly, I do not have any connection to the dungeon crawler games of old and thus, I did not enjoy this game as much. The difficulty felt way too tedious and eventually I gave up out of anger. The soundtrack is killer though. 5/10
  57. Glory of Heracles, apparently part of a famous series in Japan, this game has one of my favorite battle mechanics. The damage done by moves is based upon how many numbers you can hit correctly in succession. It's hard to point out just how much fun it is! Story is really lame sadly, starring a main character who has forgotten his past and wishes to regain his memories. It's rather cheap and for it's price, it's a good grab! 6/10
  58. Lost in Blue, a fun game about finding your way off an island while caring for a practically blind girl. Going around and trying to find out the mysteries of the island gave me a feeling I find hard to explain. I will always remember eating the different mushrooms to figure out which ones gave me buffs and which ones gave me debuffs. My only gripe is in the lack of direction. It took me 80 in-game days to beat this game without a guide; with a guide it took about 50. With a little more direction, this game would've been perfect. 9/10
  59. Lost in Blue 2, this game tried adding new things to the Lost in Blue formula and failed. The pacing is all off and the game just feels like a washed down version of the first. The addition of new minigames is fun, but the highlights are all overshadowed by the constant tasks with no time to explore. 5/10
  60. Lost in Blue 3, the sequel that we needed for the Lost in Blue series. This game is much better than 2, fixing the flow of the game while also providing many indicators so you never feel lost. The four playable characters all offered different story paths and added to the replayability! The minigames were on point, the story was fun, and the choices you were able to make were interesting for the most part! Certain portions felt like filler, but that is my only issue. 9/10
  61. Magical Starsign, this game is definitely a JRPG for children. The bright and popping visuals are pleasing to the eye and are some of my favorite on the DS. Soundtrack was amazing and the story was fun and quirky until the end! My main problem is the difficulty, anyone can beat this game. There is no challenge to be had and I never died once. 7/10
  62. Magician's Quest Mysterious Times, a lazy copy of Animal Crossing just with a few things added. From the character tropes to the entire premise, this game is nearly one for one Animal Crossing. The only differences come in the form of magic. You can turn into a wizard/witch at any point and cast spells. Even then, the addition is very minimal and doesn't add anything substantial enough to set it apart from the franchise it ripped off. 2/10
  63. Rondo of Swords, this is not a game for you if you want a casual experience. The game is way too difficult at times and it gives you no chances to grind. Every party member you get is needed to beat certain battles, so if one member is under-leveled, you might be softlocked. Way too unforgiving in my opinion but still a good game nonetheless. 8/10
  64. Little Red Riding's Hood Zombie BBQ, an interesting game with an even more interesting title. I love this game with all my being, letting you shoot all the zombies complete with different guns and bloody visuals. The game is sneaky though, causing you to play on hard mode to get the true ending. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, but it only tells you after you've beaten the game. Bosses were amazing and the difficulty was just right! 9/10
  65. Cooking Mama, never understood the immense love some people have for this game. It's good, it just wasn't my favorite. I enjoyed the gameplay, but it got boring after a few tries. 4/10
  66. Legacy of Ys: Books 1&2, this collection of games is both good and bad in so many different ways. The story is generic, but that's understandable as it's one of the first genre-defining JRPGS. It also is a very basic action JRPG, which again, is due to its age. I loved this purely for the simplicity and straight JRPG fun. My only issue was that between the two games, the controls changed. They have the exact same mechanics, so I'm not sure why the controls changed. Great games otherwise! 9/10
  67. My World My Way, a JRPG about a bratty girl trying to bend the world to meet her every need (sounds like my sister). Besides that though, I didn't enjoy the combat one bit. It revolves around pouting to make the monsters give up, leave their loot, and lower their levels. It's cute at first, but it loses its charm very quickly. I could handle the iffy story, but the combat was a dealbreaker for me. 1/10
  68. Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure, this is a fun one, a JRPG that is also a musical! The game's target demographic was young girls, and they did a good job! The monsters are adorable, the music, is cheesy, and the humor is amusing. The one thing I didn't understand, was the drop in difficulty. This is a remake of a PS1 game, and they lowered the difficulty of an already notoriously easy game! 8/10
  69. Mario Kart DS, one of the most polished Mario Kart games to date. This game introduced many game-defining mechanics to the franchise and has over 30 different race tracks! People call this the most definitive Mario Kart ever, and I couldn't agree more. You could play with friends over download play and the minigames were fun and creative. 10/10
  70. Harvest Moon DS, oh my god, the music is amazing! This game felt way more interactive than previous Harvest Moons as well. This game had everything I wanted, the only thing I wish it didn't have, was the bugs. It is very glitchy at times. This wouldn't be a problem if they were useful glitches or glitches that only speed runners used. By complete accident while playing, I accidentally triggered a glitch that made me lose my dog forever. RIP RuffRuff. 5/10
  71. Heroes of Mana, this game was made to try and diversify the Mana series. Needless to say, it didn't do a good job. The combat is lame, the story is laughable, and everything else is just boring. 1/10
  72. Children of Mana, this is more of a traditional Mana game, at least more so than the previous. It can be fun at times but suffers from heavy repetition and the ability to just spam attacks with no punishment for doing so. The bosses were fun but died way too quickly and I was heavily disappointed. 3/10
  73. Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja, this is one of the few rogue-likes I enjoy. The characters were funny and the plot was amusing. Combat was standard, but so many things surprised me as I went along. I remember breaking an egg in my path and then heavily regretting it as the monster that emerged slowly took all my health. This game is unforgiving, but only if you make a mistake. 8/10
  74. Izuna 2: The Unemployed Ninja Returns, this sequel was amazing but still doesn't fully reach the potential it had. Once again, the story is fun and the characters are great, but combat is still standard and nothing new is really added. I did enjoy the voice acting though, top notch stuff. 8/10
  75. Commando: Steel Disaster, this game is the worst knockoff of Metal Slug, I have ever seen. It has poor translations, it just throws enemies at you, and the level designs are crap. Don't even get me started on the hitboxes. There were times that an enemy was standing next to a house, and since the house hitboxes are so thicc, I would hit the house and not the enemy. Unpolished game with no real substance. 1/10
  76. Sands of Destruction, this game received iffy reviews when it first came out, and I'm not sure why. I loved this game! From the story to the incredible battles taking up both screens, the game was unique and amazing on so many levels, it also has voice acting! The characters were so much fun as well, my favorite being the teddy bear that will destroy you if you call him a teddy bear. Truly an unknown gem of DS JRPGs. 10/10
  77. Metal Max 3, the atmosphere and characters of this game are unmatched. The game gives you a post-apocalyptic world and lets you run loose. The freedom and creativity of this game left me playing for hours on end! 10/10
  78. Megaman Starforce: Pegasus, a spinoff Megaman game that deserves more attention. This game took the combat system from Battle Network and made it 3D and new! I'm currently hunting for the others in the series and I will spend whatever I have to in order to get them. The story was quirky and fun, visuals were great, combat was unique, and I especially loved the bosses! 10/10
  79. Steal Princess, I really tried to give this game a chance. In the end though, it has bad controls, an even worse story, and even if you know the solution to the puzzles, they have been made purposely tedious. I put in 10 hours into this game, and it was 10 hours wasted. 1/10
  80. The Chase: Felix Meets Felicity, I got this game from the dollar bin because it looked interesting. I wish I left it there. Not only is the gameplay slow, but boring, and lazy. Assets are used again and again and get boring after you've seen them for the 100th time. 1/10
  81. Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled, this game would've been perfect if it wasn't for two things, an insane encounter rate and slow combat. Let me just say, the story is one of the best I've ever seen and the environment is one of the best as well. Difficulty spikes can be annoying, but with time, you learn to prepare for them. My issue is in the combat, it's slow, and when the encounter rate is so high, I wish they would've fine-tuned the combat. 8/10
  82. Love Plus, when I bought this game, I thought this was a life-simulation game similar to the sims. Turns out, it's a dating simulation game that's only famous in Japan. I tried playing it, I couldn't get into it. If you want a good laugh though, read the stories about the people who play this game religiously. I can respect the game, but it's not for me. 5/10
  83. River King: Mystic Valley, I was so excited to play this game! While I enjoyed it, I didn't like the fish I would catch. Many of them seemed bland, and there were times I couldn't tell one from the other. It would get repetitive as times as well, needing me to catch the same fish again and again. Not for everyone, but I enjoyed it. 5/10
  84. Ragnarok DS, this game could've been a fun experience, but it is bogged down by the constant reusing of assets, backtracking, and other filler content. I found myself running through the same environments time after time and it became boring fast. Even the boss battles were iffy, leaving me disappointed. 4/10
  85. The Wild West, I love Wild West games. This game, while rough around the edges, was still a fun game to play. The visuals were good, but gameplay was hit or miss. It's a game to play once, but I don't see myself coming back to it anytime soon. 4/10
  86. Shepherd's Crossing 2, the rarest and most expensive DS game that was ever sold. I paid $400 for this game, and I only regret it slightly. Pretty much Harvest Moon but more realistic. I died many times because I forgot to eat while I was working. Great game, scary price. 10/10
  87. Mario Party DS, for being an early DS game, this game really exceeded my expectations. Most of the minigames are fun and the boards are creative and exciting! I played with friends for hours and hours. We only needed one person to own the game as well! 10/10
  88. Namco Museum DS, this collection of retro Namco games was so much fun! This game was truly my first introduction to retro gaming, and I can't thank it enough. I played some of these games for hours. They were everything arcade games should be, fun, addictive, and replayable. For what it is, 10/10
  89. LEGO Batman: The Videogame, a majorly downgraded port of the LEGO Batman game. It was fun, but only for nostalgic reasons. If I want to play LEGO Batman, I'd be better suited playing it on the PS3. 3/10
  90. Blood of Bahamut, I bought a fan translation of this game and loved it so much, I made a case and manual! It's pretty much a Monster Hunter on the DS but with a crappy story. If playing this game, play it for the combat and monster fighting fun, not the story. Controls are also iffy at times, not allowing to hit the monster where you want. Other than those small errors, it is so much fun! 8/10
  91. The Nameless Game, another horror game for the DS. I loved this game despite being scared many times. The game has jump scares but does not rely on them. The atmosphere is horrifying up until the very end and the environments are stunning for a DS game. 10/10
  92. The Nameless Game: Eye, a sequel to The Nameless Game. This game added onto the formula of the first game and, while I prefer the first game more, I can not downplay the quality and beauty of this game. 10/10
  93. From the Abyss, similar to some other games, this one is only good for the combat. Bosses are so much fun and the environments are diverse but, the story is bad. It's generic and boring. Ignoring the story though, this game is amazing! 6/10
  94. Flower Sun and Rain, this game is a Suda51 game, so I can in expecting to be confused. My expectations were met and I understood barely anything of the story. The real charm came in the puzzles, requiring you to put in number inputs based off a brochure and your conversations. Reading into the story afterwards was really interesting as well, bringing together all the weird sights I saw. I only hated all the running. There would be times I would need to run to one side of the map, all the way back, then once again to the end of the map. Other times there would be no direction of what to do. Definitely the most unique DS game I've ever played. 7/10
  95. Super Monkey Ball: Touch and Roll, this game gets a lot of hate within the Monkey Ball community. I actually really enjoyed it! I didn't find the controls too janky, the minigames are fun, and the levels are well designed. My issue lies in the camera, sometimes it works with you, other times it doesn't. It can be rather frustrating when you know the only reason you lost is because the camera worked against you. 7/10
  96. Soma Bringer, a fun and creative JRPG complete with an interesting story and fun battle mechanics. The different characters all had different play styles and after you beat the main story, you were given an additional character option as well. This added playability to an already great game! I can't wait to play it again. 10/10
  97. Tales of the Tempest, this is known as one of the worst games in the Tales series, a title rightfully earned. The combat is dull, the story left me with way too many questions, the environments were barren, and the cutscenes were lazy. Only good thing about this game are the characters. 2/10
  98. Tales of Innocence, this is the Tales game they got right. Gone are the barren environments, gone are the plotholes, gone is everything bad from Tempest! If you want to play the Tale games on the DS, play this one. The story, combat, and more are amazing and I 100% recommend. 10/10
  99. ASH: Archaic Sealed Heat, while I loved the story and combat initially, eventually the game dragged on and the combat became tedious. Every move when battling has an animation that last two or three seconds. This isn't an issue at first, but it really becomes annoying overtime. Other than that little flaw, great game! 9/10
  100. Witch's Tale, the art of this game is unmatched. I absolutely love what the developers did with the designs and environments, the combat leaves a bit to be desired though. It is uneventful and nothing has impact. The story was iffy as well, leaving me with questions and not offering solutions. This game was bang average at best and even then, that's a bit of a reach
And that's all 100 DS games! I hope you enjoyed and keep up that DS loving!
