Hey Jersey! How much snow do you have now, and how much do you predict you'll get? Forecast links and models inside.

My family and friends have a bet (and groupchat) going with how much snow we think we're going to get. 7 of us have $5 on the line each. Bets range from 11-19 inches!
I just did a measurement and got.... 13.5"! As of 3:00pm Update: 20" as of 8:15pm
I'm located in West Milford.
The snow doesn't look like its going to stop any time soon up here, and it is definitely white out conditions. Thank GOD we hired someone to plow our driveway and shovel every couple of hours.
Where are you guys and how much snow do you think will accumulate? How much do you have right now?

Why I’m holding GME

First I’m pissed that brokers, stock price (short ladder attacks) and the news were manipulated. Citadel owns silver so I believe they either control or paid news media to spread the lie Reddit was buying silver. I believe they took those profits so they can further short GME
Second, this was money I was prepared to lose. Now that I own some stock my strategy is to buy up to 100 shares over time so I can sell covered calls, which I learned from this guy
I still have faith Gamestop has the ability to become profitable in the future even if the short squeeze doesn’t happen immediately or happens over time. The addition of successful board members from Amazon, Chewy, Walmart, and QVC will turn Gamestop into a winning bet for me long-term

[Standard] December BO3 Tier List | Solidified Leaders / Unique Players | 70+ decks

Hello Spikes and almost Happy New Year!
I must say this has been a pretty interesting set (competitive, non & health wise), and for the most part as expected things really stuck in place last month. We have seen a few decks pop in like whack a mole over the course of the Zendikar Season, and many were yet to solidify against the top stack. I have several thoughts on this and some ideas below as well. One last thing I would like to note is this is the most robust tier list I have procured to date! (70+ decks all unique) I look forward to doing one more round in January, and plan to continue the unique deck trend as best as I can into our final month of Zendikar's Rising.

I pull these lists together to help give us an alternative competitive angle, as well as trends, with a nice little timestamp as I believe being competitive there is a long term knowledge angle we need to take as well :)
Additionally, I like to provide a competitive MTGA Landscape, those who like a visual or just to discuss! You can find the observations along with the tier list below. Please share your thoughts as always, and feel free to comment on the new format or decks I should consider that I missed.
Note: In the Tier list of 70+ decks certainly T1 is a sheer function of the breadth of decks, if you just held T1 as the top decks give or take a few others in the list you could probably split some into T2. Wanted to note before I get a host of comments :) Also for a good laugh - when Hushbringers Back Fire.
TLDR: The top end of the Tier List hasn’t changed much. I offer a thought on creative competitiveness. The Top 1500 is little changed in new creative decks, and yet we should still push ourselves to try new things in a diverse healthy meta.

[long] A simulation of dollar cost averaging (DCA) investing in Bitcoin

[long] A simulation of dollar cost averaging (DCA) investing in Bitcoin
Let me preface by saying this post does not aim to speculate or provide any kind of advice. In this post I am just sharing the results of a personal mini data project, where I played around with the historical Bitcoin price to calculate hypothetical returns with different DCA strategies. My code and plots are freely available on Github and you can run the calculation and play with the parameters without installing anything using mybinder. Fork, adapt and modify as you see fit. If you found this fun or interesting, I would appreciate a star on Github. I also welcome corrections of course if there are mistakes in my analysis.

The back story

I'm not a hardcore Bitcoin investor. Back in 2017, I put some toy money in on the exponential peak and tripled my investment to a grand total of 100 EUR. Then I figured the hype was over, everyone found out the metaphorical tulip bulbs were worthless, and I didn't look back.
Fast forward to 2020, and the money printers have pumped basically all asset prices to the moon. Bitcoin is above the 2017-2018 peak so this got me wondering whether it is truly here to stay, as a very volatile but in the long run appreciating asset class. Well, I might as well take the gamble and put some toy money on it.
But then the eternal question: when to invest? How much? What are the risks? The opportunities? Yes, you should sell high and buy low. But when is low, and when is high? Crypto and equity markets are second order chaotic systems: prices influence participants and in turn participants influence the prices in a recursive feedback loop. They are also zero-sum games - your win is another's loss and vice versa. For these reasons it is mathematically impossible to devise an investing strategy that will continue to win in the long run, since other participants will devise strategies to counter yours. You can only make gains by exploiting the inefficiencies and mistakes of others. You may think you are smart and you see things, and sometimes you may get lucky, but in the long run you will lose to participants with vast computational resources, human capital, and lightning fast data streams: the institutional players.
Enter dollar cost averaging. If we operate under the assumption that Bitcoin will tend to appreciate over time, then is usually a pretty safe bet to get a good (or even optimal) return. With dollar cost averaging, we invest a fixed dollar amount at fixed time intervals. We totally ignore charts, market indicators, and opinion makers. We buy high, we buy low. And over a long time, things can add op to a sizeable return. The ultimate lazy strategy.
The power of DCA is well known for equity investing, but what would happen if we apply it to the short history of Bitcoin? In the very simple DCA strategy there are still four degrees of freedom: when did you start investing, with which frequency did you invest, how much did you invest each time, and when did you cash out? I wanted to explore the effect of these parameters on the returns realized on cash out date.

The results

Let's first look at frequency and amount invested. All currency amounts are in USD because that happened to be the denomination of the BTC price data. If you invest more frequently with smaller amounts, you will lose a larger proportion to transaction fees. I took the transaction fees from coinbase to estimate the ratio of fees to gain (expressed in percent), if you invested using DCA in Bitcoin from 1/1/2018 - 1/1/2021. The result is shown in the color plot below:
https://preview.redd.it/fli4nacdroa61.png?width=850&format=png&auto=webp&s=e62245b8319227a44500192767637abcf60c5605
A remark on how you should interpret the graph: say you are at 300 USD invested per month on the x-axis and on 3 times per month on the y-axis, this means you invest 100 USD on average 3 times per month. Note also that these are the buy fees only; the sell fee you would have to pay at the end if you want to cash out is not included. Generally with investments, you don't want to be paying over 2% in costs. Everything above 2% in the plot is yellow. You can see that it basically isn't worth it to invest less than 50 USD at a higher frequency than once a month. Note also that these are low estimates for fees due to the high valuation of bitcoin on 1/1/2021. If you cash out at a lower price point, the ratio of fees to gain will be higher.
If we look purely at the absolute gain for DCA over this same period, frequency has limited influence on the return, and is basically a linear function of the amount invested per month. So if you consistently invested 500 every month from the peak of 1/1/2018 to 1/1/2021, you would have made about 50000 of pure profit, evaluated on 1/1/2021.
https://preview.redd.it/kczz3m7iuoa61.png?width=860&format=png&auto=webp&s=937142e28c4dc36ce160a9dd047a40f66d3ee0ed
In relative terms, that's about 80-90% per year (This is just the total relative gain divided by number of years, not compounded. Should have taken a root. Whatever.). You see below that the percentage you gain is only slightly influenced by transaction fees. The "stepped" transaction fee function is reflected in the 4 slanted lines. The horizontal lines are an effect of market timing, and they become more pronounced near lower investing frequencies. Obviously if you invest big a few times, you could potentially make more, but you could also lose more.
https://preview.redd.it/rk6iskcgwoa61.png?width=869&format=png&auto=webp&s=6bba4d83cab87eede86e8ebb9cf6616d9b68a44c
So what about market timing? It's harder to study or visualize this systematically, but I thought I would show two examples. Suppose you gave up on BTC and cashed out on 1/1/2019. What is your gain depending on the time you started DCA? The figure below shows the total return (in percent) you would have made as a function of trading frequency and starting date (investing amount is 500/month to ignore effect of fees). Superimposed is the daily BTC price. Well, even if you started at the beginning of the rally, in say 07/2017, you would have made significant losses, because the bulk of your investments would have been made at a time when the price was higher than on cash-out day. Only if you made a big play in early 2017 and did not invest significantly into the peak would you have made big gains. Basically if you stepped on the hype train too late, and you did not get off until 2019, you would have lost.
https://preview.redd.it/o2sfgzshyoa61.png?width=752&format=png&auto=webp&s=79b656a72698a500d5124062385f5a31a23badee
If we now change the cash-out date to 1/1/2020, before the current rise, we see a completely different picture (sorry that the date label overlaps):

https://preview.redd.it/wpw25ilf0pa61.png?width=757&format=png&auto=webp&s=8a104068f9528aa15383997d107a2f5b09f6613a
If you stayed consistent for another year, even if you started investing on the big peak, you would have gained 10-30 percent, which is totally not bad at all for 2 years of investing. Of course if you started investing before the peak you would have monstrous returns. Only if you waited to start investing in the second peak of 2019 would you have incurred losses. Hindsight is 2020, and this is a nice illustration that "time in the market beats timing the market".
A final picture to illustrate the effect of investing frequency. The reality is that you have totally no idea which date to start investing. Then any pick of date is just as good as the next. So let's say we pick random days to start investing on the interval 1/1/2017 - 1/1/2021. What is our expected return on cash-out date 1/1/2021? Below I plotted the maximum, minimum, mean, average and standard deviation of total return when picking a random start date, as a function of investing frequency. If you made a few big plays and tried to time the market, the potential pay off is huge, but you also risked not gaining very much at all. In this case, because the price on cash-out date is so huge it looks like things can't "go tits up", but if you would make a plot for another cash out time, the same principles apply and you could have made huge losses. In general, the graphs smooth out when investing at a frequency higher than once per month. There is still a huge spread on profitability at all frequencies, which reflects the inherent volatility.
https://preview.redd.it/vsm8u74x2pa61.png?width=598&format=png&auto=webp&s=525de988a8513316fc76083ead8afb0861dbe358

Conclusion

If Bitcoin is an appreciating asset, it can make sense to invest in it using dollar cost averaging. Due to the super freaky volatility, you can still make some pretty good returns using such a basic strategy. If you would have started investing on the peak of 2018 and stayed consistent until 2020, you would have come out with a pretty good return, and obviously by now your investment would be huge. Lower investing frequencies lead to potentially higher pay offs but also much higher uncertainty and potential losses. A frequency of 1 time per month or once per 2 months seems to be a decent balance between stability of returns and minimization of fees. Of course if Bitcoin ever becomes irrelevant, you lose everything.

Respect the Flaming Carrot (Flaming Carrot Comics)

The Flaming Carrot is a superhero vigilante who fights crime with a variety of gadgets. Once a normal law-abiding citizen, he read 5,000 comic books in a row for a bet and came out with irreparable brain damage. It was then that he decided to wear a giant carrot mask and shoot criminals to death with a handgun. He guards Palookaville from a variety of villains, such as flying dead dogs, a couple of alien invasions, and an army of clones of Hitler’s left foot. He’s incredibly childlike and stupid, but through sheer grit and murderous rage, he earns his place as a true American hero.

[Standard] BO1 Tier List | December 2020 | Rush Hour Finish Strong

Hello Spikes Happy New Years Eve :)
First off - Have a safe, Happy, and Healthy New Years. I will see you next year. Second, good luck today to those chasing a Mythic Qualifier spot, may one of the decks below help you in your journey.
Of all my tier list posts this certainly has been one for the ages. Not only is BO1 in my opinion the hardest to stack rank, the sheer volume of the 70+ decks some admittedly outside more commonly played decks have proved a healthy nice challenge. I also believe this reflects very well on the current state of magic, despite some of the hiccups throughout the year. I always look at things positively with solutions because I feel it makes the world a better place for all of us :)
I look forward to doing one more round in January, and plan to continue the unique deck trend as best as I can into our final month of Zendikar's Rising. Additionally, I may just have to break my true top deck trend, but I am the guy that's happy to show up to top 1500 with a T5 deck ;) (To be fair I think I may slightly be forced to just to the length of Zendikar's Rising to Kaldheim, and keeping with a daily unique trend)
One thing to call out as I have been asked before on how I pull these together as well. BO1 is a slightly different beast vs. BO3. Here I rely heavier on win rate stats at very competitive levels starting at Mythic then work my way backwards through the tiers if needed for additional POVs. It is also based on gameplay - and I myself favor BO1 until I hit Top 1500 usually :) - I take into consideration untapped.ggs companion app stats as they tend to have a great amount of data, and a good ability to slice and dice decks.

I have several folks that ask, and have done several player featured decks. I rather enjoy this so please don’t hesitate to reach out or ask. JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #5: Round 3 Match 2 - Emilie 'Dread' Delacroix vs Jade 'Antlerhead'

And now, at a slightly slowed pace from previous rounds, we have our second match.
No M1 results yet, obviously, as there are, at the time of this being posted, about five hours left in voting for that! So you need to act quickly if you want to have your impact on a tourney first, wherein two player characters each align with a powerful judge-created ally to fight over the fate of an exploited, defeated sea monster.
Memory:
It was generations ago that Sentient Oona was dug out of the ground in Alltai Basin, and unusually quickly - even back then, they had developed their reputation as almost as standoffish as I am - locals of the AD were taken in by this being, turning it into a local mascot and tourist attraction in a district already full of them. They say it’s an alien… No way it could be, right? But ah, it doesn’t make any difference. The family that controls the area, they’ve never much liked the idea of people trying to get to understand it, study it. It was only by the chance of being there when it was unearthed that I could try.
That thing… It hasn’t done anything yet, but every day, I know it. It plots. It waits. For what, for when, I cannot say… But its power is immense, and I think we’ve only ever seen a fraction.
Ugh, you’re still going to try and capture it? Listen, you’re young. You have your lives ahead of you, all six of you. Do not fuck with that thing… Heh, even that damned Venus knows better than to bother, and she was bold enough to commune with the damn thing. You’d think ten years retreating out here would make a person complacent, but she’s as fiery and stubborn as ever. And even she knows this is a stupid idea. So run back to your uncle before you get hurt. I won’t get any satisfaction out of an I-told-you-s-
Gnnkh-! Don’t be rash, c’mon! This fucking overgrown bug can’t kill me with a trick like- Ugh! I told you idiots to run!
(Credit to CPU_Dragon for the match idea!)
Scenario:
The Black Hill Estate - Morning
Jade, Antlerhead to many, had been on autopilot somewhat in recent days. That last outing to the city had proven to be enough excitement for a few months, even managing to take down some stranger who, since, they had learned was one of the strongest people in the Metropolis. This made them feel…
It didn’t, really, beyond their continued questioning of what compelled them to spare Elliot’s life. Hell, they’d barely even looked at the drive Nova Nascens had left them afterwards, though Jesse and tall sunglasses boy had definitely seemed interested in trying to crack that ever since the self-destructing computer it had been in repaired itself, replenished as all resources in the estate tended to be.
They didn’t care, and the vegan (whatever a vegan was) had said that its encryption was tight enough that even he couldn’t crack it, and Jesse wasn’t here to explain a word of it, so why should they bother looking into it? Waste of time.
They could see the Jackalope they had given Keith Moon, maybe, but that was so far, and the people in the way would shoot them. Waste of time.
Maybe they would have some cereal… Or milk. Or bowl. Perhaps even combine them if they were feeling spicy. Yes… Eating wasn’t a waste of time.
Certainly, the green-clad teenager in an aviator hat seemed to agree, by how he sat on the kitchen counter, drinking Nix’s orange juice, as Jade often did, from one of Cab’s overpriced wine glasses that looked no different from ones you could get at any superstore.
He glanced up, then, tilting his head at Jade. “Home alone, huh? I was wondering who would be here if I waited… it seemed like the most obvious place where there’d be somebody, anyway. Honestly, I’m glad it’s you…”
“What are… You… Doing here?”
“He’s escorting me.” A tense, tired-sounding voice spoke up behind Jade as they had begun to approach Green. Turning around, then, they saw the form of an older woman, one who by gossip was in fact very, very old: Memory Management, a historian of sorts. She snapped, then, at her companion. “We don’t have time for pleasantries, Flying Man, or stealing breakfast. Don’t get comfortable.”
“Got enough time to explain to Jade, right?” Green began downing the juice rapidly.
“Urgh… Eternal children, I swear.” Memory groaned, then, saying quickly, “we were in the area when I received an ‘anonymous tip’ that some idiot was going to mess with Sentient Oona again, and this was the closest place where people like you gathered.”
“I was surprised you wanted to come out here, Memory.”
“I’ve been out this way before,” she answered, “even further, even… Coming here is nothing to me.”
“Sentient… What?” Jade had little interest in Memory’s lore, only wanting to highlight information on that jumbled mess of syllables they were being bothered about. “Explain.”
“Sentient Oona is one of the many ‘cryptids’ of this area,” Memory explained, “a beast of terrible power unearthed quite some time ago, and something I’ve seen generations of idiots revere like some kind of local mascot.”
“I have a few t-shirts!”
“It killed you.”
“You know what they say, right?” Green shrugged, “if an animal attacks you, it’s probably your fault somehow… And anyway, I don’t think of the boys who died back then as ‘us,’ you know?”
“Stop… Getting… Sidetracked.” Jade was getting tense. “What… Do you… Expect me... to do?”
“Right. Not one to waste time…” Memory nodded. “The biggest idiots of all are the ones who think that they can exploit its power, or capture it, or kill it, or contain it… When these things happen, it goes into something of a frenzy, as do its acolytes. In short… It’s going to kill a lot of people, bystanders or just idiots, and nobody is going to give a damn in that town afterwards, if this ‘tip’ is true.”
“Fragile humans… Getting killed?” Jade pondered, then, what had been said there. “Why… Should I… Help...”
Jade thought about it some. Inch, from the few times they were briefly in conversation, seemed to really have it out for Memory for some reason, so they had an excuse to dislike her and want to spite her, but Jade wasn’t sure why from meeting her themselves.
Meanwhile, there weren’t any others home… And of course, Jade didn’t care enough to ask if any of them were near enough to pawn this off to. If they were telling the truth (and they had no reason to think they weren’t…), then refusing to do anything here to… Stop Oona? Maybe?
Anyway, refusing here, when they might have been the only one who could do anything, and when even thinking about fighting this thing gave them this sense of overwhelming dread, frustration, an unnatural unease…
Then what could others do, who couldn’t fight like they did?
“Lead... the way. And... do not… annoy me.”
In a nice convertible - A Rural Road towards Sentient Oona
“You believe in ‘aliens,’ Delacroix?” Two very evil, very white individuals were en route to Sentient Oona themselves, listening to evil music while fresh off a conversation about evil lairs. Mr. Jones had asked the question, and Emilie ‘Dread’ Delacroix responded first with a “hm?” before more silence, contemplative.
“Certainly, I do not doubt the existential status of extraterrestrial beings, not only of the primitive monocellular variety, but also of beings of immense intellect comparable to or perhaps even surpassing humanity’s own… In my own opinion and assessment, it is more absurd to postulate without falsifiability that we are truly solitary in this vast universe. Perhaps, even, it is plausible that otherworldly life has at points communicated with that of our own… Though I doubt there are any formalized agreements, as some individuals have postulated throughout time, by considering the logistics of covering up such a thing in a world where our leaders are so unsubtle as Presidents West and Supreme.”
“Heh, yeah, imagine Kanye knowin’ about aliens and not sayin’ a thing for four years… Think 46 was gonna give them free ponies too?” That earned a harmonized chuckle from both parties, then, before Mr. Jones shook his head. “You about took the words outta my mouth, personally…”
“It is the soundest conclusion, yes, the ability to ultimately say, ‘I don’t know, but it would make sense, so I believe it.’”
Mr. Jones turned the radio down. “They say Sentient Oona’s an alien, you know that? That they straight dug an alien outta the ground and put it on display… But the family that rules Alltai Basin, they sure as hell don’t let nobody research to say otherwise. You can literally get arrested and fined for tryin’ to say there’s some other explanation for it, it’s in the town charter. Would take a master of infiltration to get in and out to try an’ talk to it.”
“Are you insinuating you know of its intentions, through the utilization of your ‘Worm?’”
“Just a bit. Helped a friend look into it a few months back… Didn’t get an answer for sure on if it’s from space or not, but apparently surmised that it ain’t brainwashing all those crazy fans, they just actually like it enough to kill and die for it and the idea of it, but that other than knowin’ that, Sentient Oona doesn’t really care about ‘em either way. Mostly means to just sit there and vibe and wait until its own version of the end of days or something.”
“Ah, I see! So you are bringing me out there because it relates to the apocalyptic conundrum we all mean to prevent! A show of harsh altruism… It is almost a shame, though, when you describe it as such. A malicious and evil being who nonetheless is the sole ruling power over its subjects, allowing them to do as they please as long as it can kill them… Sentient Oona may be the figurehead of my ideal society.”
“Hey, don’t get it twisted!” Mr. Jones chuckled. “First off, this ain’t anarcho-monarchism… I don’t feel like getting into a whole talk about the theory, since I’m sure you’ve read more about it than me, but nothing in the AD is anarcho-anything. Second off, nah, it’s a completely unrelated end of days, somethin’ set to come, like, long after we’re all dead. It’s apparently pretty miffed that something might beat it to the punch.”
“I… See.” Dread, confused, looked to her driver. “So why, then, are we troubling ourselves with this? You’ve said before that the very presence of persons such as myself and my contemporary city arrivals are more likely than most to incur its hostility simply by being within proximity of it, so if it is of no consequence to us, this seems like an error in judgment. My compatriots had been complicit in some trouble for the nearby Keshem family, I recall, and they have been missing ever since, either dead or in some torturous prison I don’t even get to know anything about. But I bet the family in charge of this era doesn’t even have torture prisons like they do, so getting apprehended won’t even be fun.”
“It’s not about fighting Sentient Oona, Delacroix,” Mr. Jones explained eagerly, “it’s about who it’ll bring… Just trust me on this, yeah? The goals you’re hopin’ to achieve, something essential will come of you bein’ here through all this chaos. I wouldn’t burn ya on this, c’mon, you know my good character!”
“I see… Yes, you say that, and already, I think I’m beginning to understand.” Dread had remembered some other bits of the conversation that had started this, but rather than discussing them outright, she recognized that they were growing closer to town. “So all I must do is stay close by and survive, yes?”
En Route to Alltai Basin, Agriculture District
“Alright, almost there,” the green kid led the party forward, having suggested that, given the current state of affairs, the final stretch of this journey would be best managed on foot.
“Keep calm… Er, if you even can get phased by anything. You might feel something strange as we get close.” Memory chimed and drilled in the warning for what was now the fifth time. She was less physically capable than the other two, and looked almost silly piggyback on the much shorter aviator hat kid, but she had seemed adamant about not wanting to be abandoned by this.
Jade snorted and looked around for signs of danger. The forest was quiet, nothing out of the ordinary. Their run in with a jackalope told them that looks could be deceiving but they believed they could handle whatever was thrown at them.
The sky suddenly went dark as a flock of birds damn near blotted out the sun.
Then Jade felt something not alien to them, but completely out of left field, like a sudden wave washing over them, as if both at once alien and nostalgic in the worst of ways. The hairs on their body rose and their pulse elevated. Jade put a shoulder on the green kid in front of them to stop him from moving further.
“We are… being… watched.” Jade looked around slowly for an unseen assailant. Their senses tingled, unable to pinpoint any tangible threat.
The flock of birds passed and sunlight streamed back through. The feeling didn’t pass; if anything it was getting stronger.
“This means we are close,” Memory stated, Jade growled in response at the obvious to them statement, “and already, it has awoken… I had a feeling we would be too late to affect that.”
“You are close, I mean,” Memory continued, “Sentient Oona has a way of triggering this effect, some people are more sensitive to it than others. When alert like this, Sentient Oona recognizes some people as potential threats to its existence, whether they have malice in their hearts or not.”
“How...far…” Jade still didn’t let up. The sensation was overpowering, it was like an attack could happen at any moment from any direction. The rustling leaves, the snapping of branches, any motion or sound was enough to grab Jade’s eyes for a split second before they refocused on the direction they were headed.
“We have exactly one mile left as of the end of this sentence!” Green spoke with a certain confidence.
Jade gave another growl, all of their instincts were telling them the fight would happen here. Jade grappled with the knowledge they were being presented, gripping tightly to Green’s shoulder as they contemplated.
“Maybe we should go now, if you can’t keep calm here who knows what will…”
“No...” Jade interrupted, this threat… They had begun to feel it all the way from the estate. It was upsetting the natural order of things and couldn’t be allowed to remain as is.
Jade calmed themself; as Memory put it, showing hostility would be their own demise. Their heartbeat stilled as they resolved themself. A faint buzz could still be felt in their mind, but Jade resolved to overcome this poisoning of the senses.
Sentient Oona (The town, not the namesake)
Emilie Delacroix’s very presence had begun to start something of a scene, she could feel. There was a certain agitation in the air as she and Mr. Jones parted ways; he’d said he wanted to evacuate some people from the epicenter of the incident… Even in the midst of nefarious mischief, sometimes he would turn full-on benevolent community organizer like the two were no different. It intrigued Dread.
Regardless, though, as she moved closer to the core of the ringed town, to the shrine which commemorated the ‘alien,’ she thought she might as well ‘act natural’ while the heat was still low. To that end, then, she poked holes in an overly-large newspaper and held it in front of her face as she walked in an overly-secretive stride towards a gift kiosk selling marketable plushies, t-shirts, and keychains bearing a very extraterrestrial likeness.
“Hey, unsuspicious newspaper-reading stranger!” The man running the kiosk said, as Dread held the newspaper even closer to her face and whistled a jaunty, successfully unsuspicious tune, “sorry to say Sentient Oona’s closed to outside visitors now, but you can still buy its merch! Proceeds all go directly to supporting the Sentient Oona Fan Society!”
“Fan society? Enlighten me on what it is this organization does, and why I ought to support it financially.”
“Oh, we do plenty! Parties around town, upkeep for the shrine, talk about how to keep tourists coming in and coming back, live shows, armed guards to shoot anyone who tries to mess with our mascot, you know, typical stuff! But we do it all for free!”
It was then that Dread noticed the rifle strapped to the man’s back, and that elsewhere in the town, a few other figures were patrolling about with much the same. Urgh, Jones had mentioned that Sentient Oona had an overzealous fan club with direct ties to community leaders, who might help it if violence broke out, but he’d neglected to bring up that it was an outright volunteer militia. Perhaps because he basically ran one of those himself until ODIN took it over?
“Certainly, I will part with paltry amounts of my currency so I might commemorate this occasion with a souvenir to place right by my other fun trinkets. Tell me, what is the unsafest of your knick-knacks?”
While speaking, then, Dread felt something buzzing within the pages of her newspaper, making a quizzical sound as she turned the page, only to drop the thing in surprise as fluttering dragonfly wings emerged from it, sparking and flying right into her face before detonating in a sort of electrical charge.
“Gh…” She had to hold it together for the sake of not being weird in public, quickly fixing her mask and straightening her hair, whose natural pink was overtaking black at the roots, out so it wasn’t caught in it. “You’ve a strange insect problem, you know…”
The man was giving her an alarmed, appalled look, then, as she heard more buzzing and fluttering from nearby. She could see him beginning to reach for his rifle.
“You… What have you done to Sentient Oona? It doesn’t just attack people unprompted, you know!”
“I assure you with utmost honesty, this is my first time setting foot in this town, and I have never once conspired against it,” Dread spoke, nonetheless realizing that backing up was a good idea now.
“Well, it knows stuff like this! You’re a threat to it somehow, stranger! So no! I will not even sell you my SAFEST of trinkets…” He cocked his rifle, and Dread noticed others also readying theirs. “But we’ll give you commemorative bullets for free.”
Dread could take this guy easily, but if this was the Stand(? These people could certainly see it fine… But even with Stands, that wasn’t unheard of) ability of ‘Sentient Oona’ she had been primed on, then she couldn’t just attack thoughtlessly. No, if she was going to kill anyone in this town, she needed to make sure it didn’t bite her in the ass in the bad way.
For now, she ran towards the shrine, over the calling of, “STOP THAT WOMAN BEFORE SHE KILLS OUR MASCOT!”
Jade turned their head in the direction of the man calling to stop some woman.
They had been swatting away dragonflies with some irritation this entire time, slowly making their way towards the shrine. Green and Memory had been aiding in the evacuation, and Sentient Oona, for some reason, had not targeted either of them, but rather honed directly in on Jade as they reached the outskirts of the town. These bugs were starting to be everywhere, and so too was this ‘fan club’ with guns, who were also training their sights on Jade while mostly focusing for the moment on securing escape for those not interested in dying to protect an invincible alien mascot.
“ALIENHEADS ASSEMBLE!”
“NOBODY SAYS A BAD WORD ABOUT OUR EXTRATERRESTRIAL!”
“HURT IT AND YOU HURT THE WHOLE COMMUNITY.”
“Ugh… Bothersome… Making me… WANT to punch it.” Jade snickered at the mental image, but understood that the social ramifications of trying to kill the alien just were not worth it, and that they would absolutely be stopped before it could happen, if they knew this ‘ability’ properly.
Jade, then, finally saw another figure running in, deftly hopping over another dragonfly and skidding to a halt before them, mere meters away from the shrine wherein the alleged alien had rested for so long, currently outfitted with local sports memorabilia and ‘GO GOLD KNIGHTS’ spray paint atop a ‘Sentient Oona Aliens’ sportsball team banner, overcoated again with dried blood and dragonfly bits.
“Ah… Salutations! I have… Heard tell of you,” Dread said, catching her breath and waving. “We’ve encountered quite the conundrum, haven’t we?”
“You…” Jade wasn’t at all ‘plugged in,’ per se, but some news was impossible to avoid, especially with Jade having been in the city on that day several months ago. This was a well known Stand User of some kind… And someone who had clearly been in town longer, by the novelty mug with the price tag still on it which had just fallen out of her clothes. “You… Caused… This.”
“It would appear so, unfortunately,” Dread answered, a sharp hand on her own chin, “though you speak as though I am to be faulted for it when, likely, any one of the ten-times-eight of us to be nigh-simultaneously brought here could have agitated it like this, let alone a pair of us. I wonder, then, if neutralizing one of us might pacify it, bring it to exhaustion… Assuming we cannot kill it outright, which seems likely.”
“You... Talk... Too much.” Jade had a headache just hearing Dread speak twice, curling their fists and taking a firmer stance, “If I… Take you out... It stops attacking… Then... These people... Are safer…”
“I suppose I should have seen this coming…” Dread sighed melodramatically, “foreseen that you would have been led to believe that I am your enemy in this, rather than another individual caught up in this hullabaloo.” She paced around some, then, fixing her outfit again with a slight spring in her step. “But it is no matter… Be it here today, or halfway across town tomorrow, assuming both of us kept fighting for long enough, we would cross paths eventually. Now is as good a time as any to subdue you. Ah, but that said! You ought to learn who your opponent is first… Antlerhead, I believe you were spoken of as? You may call me ‘Dread.’”
“Dread…”
Jade’s stance remained firm, and they looked around, gnarling, growling, snarling, and assessing the situation with visible annoyance at Dread’s verbosity. They would retort one more time, then.
“Shut up and fall down.”
OPEN THE GAME!
(credit to CaptainSpooky27 for the match art!)
Location: The center of the town of Sentient Oona, in the Agricultural District. Here are rows of various souvenir shops and a shrine built in the middle of a river basin. Jade starts near the right center and Dread starts near the left center.
The area here is 80 by 80 meters with each tile being 5 by 5 meters.
The grey tiles are concrete street paths, the green tiles are grass, the blue tiles are a river basin, and the yellow tiles are sand. The green circles are 5 meter tall circles, the purple rectangles are souvenir shops with the doors shown in orange and some have rooftop access as shown by the yellow squares.
The souvenir shops all have about the same types of products, but each shop’s wares are hand-made or designed locally. Some examples are post cards, T-shirts, hats, mugs, wooden carvings/figurines, key chains, plushies, posters, and whatever else you would expect to find at a small souvenir shop, except all based around Sentient Oona.
The oval in the middle of the water is the fully walled shrine structure and the brown rectangle is a bridge. Inside the shrine is an alien beast as represented by the oval (more on that in the additional information) and there are 6 security guards as represented by circles. Around the area are more security guards represented by black circles. The river is only around 1.5 meters deep near the center of the basin and the center of the river itself.
The light blue diamonds are dragonflies produced by a stand effect (more details on them below) the rightmost 4 are targeting Jade and the leftmost 4 are targeting Dread.
The area has civilians around, mostly in the streets and in the stores, but as they noticed the conflict that’s about to happen and will fully clear out through the walkway paths a minute into the match. They will essentially start to file/trickle through the nearest exits they can find as safely as they can. There are about 100 of them but that number will rapidly decrease as they file out.
Goal: The Sentient Oona has been agitated by your presence and is attacking. Avoid being RETIRED before your opponent. After one of you is defeated, the match will count as concluded.
Additional Information: The town of Sentient Oona has an alien beast inside, after which it is named. This beast is mostly dormant and unmoving, but has recently become agitated, and attacked both players.
Sentient Oona has 515 physicals, Alien 5, and Popular 4. The people of this town love it, and will do basically anything to defend it. This isn’t an ability of any sort; it doesn’t even seem to have the capacity to manipulate, let alone the inclination; if it can understand any human or animal language that it has been exposed to, it has given no indication.
Sentient Oona is a multi-eyed, scaled, horn-covered giant with a glowing, translucent ribcage, within which one can constantly see vague shapes and hear the beating of wings. It is constantly sitting within its very hot, modestly decorated shrine, cross-legged and immobile, unblinking yet at once staring at everything.
It does not have a clear way of communicating, yet if a person sits opposite it, matching its stillness for several minutes and staring into its eyes, sometimes, they will understand something of its knowledge, and it will know something of them in return. Doing this is illegal in Sentient Oona, and can be tried in any court in Alltai territory as a quite serious offense. Every time this is repeated, meanwhile, a person’s own physical safety and sanity grow more and more at risk.
It fundamentally distrusts each and every one of the active player characters unless given strong reason not to, and will bestow upon those who remain no gifts.
Stand(?) Name: [Static God]
Its appearance is an electromagnetic shimmer, similar to an aurora borealis around Sentient Oona’s body.
Ability:
[Static God] creates an ambient neuro-electrical field around it. This acts as an electromagnetic sonar and lets it sense neural signals.
Out of the electrical field, [Static God] can also manifest a semi-autonomous swarm of electric dragonflies. Each one has the ability to turn into and move as a bolt of lightning and deliver powerful and potentially lethal shocks. While as a bolt they can only travel in roughly a straight line and will take awhile to remanifest themself, but they move extremely quickly while it lasts.
Hostile actions can alert these dragonflies to your location and cause more to manifest based on the degree of hostility.
Power: B (Dragonflies and their electricity can be highly lethal.)
Speed: S-C (While the swarm takes awhile to manifest units naturally, they have the base speed of dragonflies and their charge/electric attack is very quick.)
Range: S-A (While the practical and damaging effects of its ability don’t reach past 200 meters, the ambient electrical field can still be faintly felt by those who are sensitive to it.)
Durability: A (Immeasurable staying power. The electromagnetic field around its user’s body is able to deflect all manner of attacks without giving them a chance to even touch the user’s body.)
Precision: S-C (The swarm is semi autonomous, but they are able to be directed at targets. Oona can “see” clearly through the electrical field it creates and sense what people are doing.)
Match Details and Mechanics:
Due to the stand’s effect, all “Hostile” actions by the Players will cause more dragonflies to manifest nearby, around within 15 meters of the player.
“Hostile” action here is defined as any action where you directly try to harm an individual or group. This does extend to say doing property damage or causing a fire with the intent to harm. Self harm doesn’t count as a hostile action.
The larger the Hostile action, the more dragonflies are spawned.
Here are some general hostility levels and examples
  • Physically inconsequential: Say a grab, throwing sand in somebody’s eyes, or mildly debilitating them; something that doesn’t necessarily injure but does harm a person in the moment. Causes dragonflies to pick up your location.
  • Physical Harm, but not lasting damage: A punch that would result in knock out or pain without any lasting consequences. Causes dragonflies to pick up your location and 1 more to spawn.
  • Physical Harm, lasting injury: A stab wound, intending to break bones, or moderately debilitating. Cause dragonflies to pick up your location and 2 more to spawn.
  • Physical Harm, MajoPermanent injury: Cutting off somebody’s arm or crippling them for life. Causes dragonflies to pick up your location and 3 more to spawn.
  • Lethal: Intent to kill or attempted murder. Causes dragonflies to pick up your location and 4 more to spawn.
  • (Special) Any Action to Harm/Attack Oona: 10 extra dragonflies to spawn on top of whatever level of hostility it was.
There is a 3 second cooldown window where the stand cannot spawn more dragonflies to you if you go for something of roughly the same hostility level or lower in that time frame.
Any dragonflies you cause to spawn will be targeted on you. More details below on how they function.
Sentient Oona: Will remain stationary for the entire match and is impossible to Retire due to a combination of its stand ability, its alien physiology, and its high natural endurance relative to its species.
Security:
  • The active members of the Sentient Oona Fan Society Guard Unit have 343 physicals, 4 in Firearms Trained and a 3 in Perceptiveness.
  • These fans each come equipped with a pistol and a semi-automatic rifle. They have very good trigger discipline and will not shoot unless they have a clear shot. For the first minute or so of the match they will be much more cautious about shooting due to the civilians around or causing a panic, but that won’t stop them if they can line up a completely accurate shot.
  • In general they will keep their distance from players to maintain their firing range. If you start approaching the shrine or seem to get within 15 meters of it or the bridge, the guards inside will go out onto the bridge and target you.
  • The guards on the roofs generally won’t move from their position unless they are about to get compromised in which case they can opt to jump down or to other roofs.
  • After a minute passes 6 more guards will come through the north street and will seek out and attack the players if they find them.
Dragonflies:
  • As the match progresses, every 5 seconds [Static God] will spawn 1 dragonfly within 25 meters of each player.
  • These dragonflies can turn themselves into bolts of electricity and launch themselves towards the players. If these bolts hit anything else they will discharge themselves in a 1 meter electrical explosion, de-manifesting themselves. After de-manifesting after 15 seconds they will re-manifest where they last were and continue looking for the player they initially targeted. While these attacks can be blocked, the heat and force generated from the discharge can wear down objects over repeated attacks.
  • They have the average durability of a dragonfly but when they die they only de-manifest without discharging. They also exhibit all the other average traits of dragonflies, such as near 360 degree vision, being able to see the world in slow motion, 30 mph top flight speed, 4 winged flight maneuverability, and a boasted 95% success rate on hunting (albeit on insects it preys on).
  • The various NPCs, while obviously very hostile right now, are recognized by Sentient Oona as fighting to protect it; while it doesn’t particularly care if they live or die, no dragonflies will spawn in to target the various attackers supporting it.
  • There is no upwards cap of how many dragonflies there can be, they will continually be spawned and remanifest until the match concludes.
  • They will generally search for the player they are targeting as best they can flying through the sky, but if they can’t get to the player, they can take a second to manually de-manifest themselves and re-manifest themselves to say get inside buildings or out of confinement.
  • They will not switch the player they are targeting at any point, but can harm them as collateral damage if their behavior is exploited in order to do so.
  • Dragonflies made by the stand do count for triggering “Hostile” actions if they are targeted directly, but all other stands do not.
Team Combatant JoJolity
Black Hill Estate Jade “I cannot stand this terrible, discordant noise! Stop it at once!” Sentient Oona… It just wants to be left be, is that it? Well, you can’t let it kill you, but you can try to make that happen. Creatively integrate as much property damage into your strategy as you can so the townsfolk will never want to come back here again.
Red Carpet Rennaisance Emilie “Dread” Delacroix “What in God’s name are you?! Give me a straight answer this time!” This so-called extraterrestrial sits on a throne of lies, and because of those who parasocially worship it, blood will spill again and again… And probably make your mission here harder. Creatively integrate as much property damage into your strategy as you can so the townsfolk will never want to come back here again.

[Standard] BO1 Tier List | December 2020| GL Rush Hour See you Next Year

Hello Planeswalkers! Happy New Years Eve :)
Previous Informative Tiers for Reference on Zendikar's Rising Seasons (Reddit spikes articles)
December Standard: BO3
December Historic: BO3 & BO1
November: BO1 & BO3
October Expanded: BO1 & BO3
October Short List: BO1 & BO3
TLDR: There has been a bit of a shuffle in T1. Archetypes are solidifying, a spec became mainstream, and it's cool to be on the plain ;)
Tier List
What it is, current meta observations, and deck overviews! Additionally I love sharing the observations and recent changes we have faced in an ever evolving fast paced format.
Items of Interest & Considerations:
I have produced this list from a culmination of a few things. I have reached this point by pulling together research data from multiple sources like untapped, MTGAzone, Aetherhub, twitter, personal gameplay, tournament matches, this reddit as well as others, personal stats, and consistently hitting Mythic over the last year and participation in the last Mythic Qualifier.
Again, Happy to discuss or talk about decks not included! Tier list below plus deck lists (shells - tweak to your heart's content) if you are looking for some options most all top 1500 at some point many at the #1 Rank, and multiple top end tournament results!
One last thought I would like to share: If you have a competitive deck (different than one featured) I am always happy to do a piece on it time permitting. I have several folks that ask, and have done several player featured decks. I rather enjoy this so please don’t hesitate to reach out or ask. I always try to prioritize with the following and timing or relevance - MTGA Rank (1500s)/Top Tournaments down to Plat2Mythic Decks.

Alabama Slammers Franchise Report - Year 15: The Next Generation

Welcome back to year fifteen of the Alabama Slammers Franchise Report! Here are the links to the previous versions if you want to catch up (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028, 2029, 2030, 2031, 2032,2033, 2034).
Previous Season Highlights:
Jeff Hopper wins NL batting crown.
Edgar Sanchez wins his fifth straight gold glove.
Edgar Sanchez and Ivan Manso win platinum stick awards.
Tommy Noonan wins reliever of the year award.
8 players make all-star team.
119 wins during regular season.
Crushing first-round playoff loss.
Start of Offseason:
As with the previous versions, I’ll list the moves I made, the rationale behind those moves, the season results, and the future outlook.
Here are the salaries heading into the offseason.
\Unless stated otherwise, all players were re-signed to their one-year arbitration estimate*
Departures (non-trades):
Luis Godoy
Godoy had a great three years with the Slammers, highlighted by his amazing playoff run in 2032 when he won NLCS and World Series MVP. He didn’t get the 9/$378m he wanted to re-sign but San Diego gave him a nice chunk of change in free agency. They signed him to an 8/$278.2 contract and we received a supplemental first round pick. He had a good year this season, but his ratings have already started to slip, suggesting this contract will be an albatross sooner than later.
Joey Hudson
I really thought Hudson was my long-term answer in center field, but injuries derailed his career, leading to his release at the start of the season. He signed a minor league contract with the White Sox and got to play a few games in the majors.
Josh McBride
McBride was decent in his two years in the majors, but I decided to go with other options. He still looks like a solid player and could get called up again as an injury replacement.
Manny Monzon
Monzon was supplanted by Steve Flores last year and then sent back to AAA, where he suffered a few injuries and saw his injury proneness downgraded to fragile. I could’ve kept him around in the minors but decided to give the playing time to guys with better upside. He signed a minor league deal with the Yankees and ended up starting 54 games in the majors.
Chris Ryan
Ryan had a solid six year run with us, but I decided to let him walk as a free agent. He signed a 1/$4.08m deal with the Phillies and was mediocre.
Move #1:
Signed Edgar Sanchez to an 8/$192m extension. The last year is a team option with a $4m buyout.
Sanchez is my most irreplaceable player, so there was no chance I was letting him go. He won the gold glove and platinum stick award at second base last year, has great character, and has never seen an injury. I think this is a fair deal for both sides.
Move #2:
Slammers Receive: Wil Mireles, $7m Cash
Red Sox Receive: Ivan Manso, Josh Sheppard, Steve Bacon
It’s interesting to see how my trade philosophy has shifted from winning the value battle to acquiring specific pieces. We’re giving up two really good players, and another solid one, in exchange for one guy, but that one guy is exactly what I need. Mireles won a gold glove in center field last year and should be an excellent leadoff man. Manso and Sheppard are good players, but I have minor leaguers that can approximate what they do. I don’t have anyone that can do what Mireles does.
Move #3 (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3):
Slammers Receive: $30m Cash
Slammers Lose: Ray Zaragoza, Caleb Gunther, Glen Alcorn
I just sold three guys that could all make all-star teams the next few years, but I think I can justify it. Zaragoza was the easiest to part with. He had season ending injuries in each of his years as a starter and it’s not even a guarantee he’d make the majors if healthy. I’m willing to take the chance he doesn’t amount to anything. Gunther is a solid player, but he’s not going to supplant Mireles as the center field starter, and I have other guys that can serve as utility outfielders. Also, he’s fragile. Then Alcorn is one of my favorite players, but I need to clear room for the guy I’m signing in move #5. I just can’t justify keeping a fragile pitcher over my other guys that are durable.
Move #4:
Signed free agent Drew Romo to a 2/$22.5m deal. The first year is for $15m and the second year is for $7.5m.
This is about $20m more than I wanted to pay for Romo but I got into a bidding war with the Dodgers. I thought about just letting him walk but don’t have any reasonable way to replace his production.
Move #5:
Signed free agent Jose Aguilar to a 5/$55m deal. The last year is a team option with a $1m buyout.
Aguilar is one of the best relievers in the game and should form an unstoppable duo with Noonan. The deal is heavily front loaded, so if he starts to regress, I should be able to move him.
In-House Moves (Preseason):
Bobby Butler promoted from AAA. Will be a member of the starting rotation.
Jose Macias promoted from AAA. Will be a member of the bullpen.
Bob Banks promoted from AAA. Will start in left field.
Julio Guerra promoted from AA. Will start in right field vs. RHP and serve as the utility outfielder vs LHP.
Edwin Mireles promoted from AAA. Will start in right field vs. LHP and serve as the utility outfielder vs RHP.
Final Financial Situation:
We have about $31m in available funds to start the year, so should be able to do anything we need to.
Here are the salaries heading into the season.
Season Outlook:
We had a lot of turnover for a team that won 119 games last year, but I think the young guys and new acquisitions are all going to shine. If we stay healthy, we should win 100+ games and make the playoffs. Hopefully, we can break our streak of losing in the first round.
Move #6 (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7):
Slammers Receive: $20.8m Cash
Slammers Lose: Daniel Ventura, Eric Scarpino, Ernesto Mendoza, Josh Huffman, Juan Rodriguez, Micah Laroe, Sean Vipperman, Tetsuo Nakamura
Our draft pick signing bonuses were pretty hefty since we selected three players with “impossible” demands, so we had to scrounge up some more cash. There are some interesting pieces amongst the players we lost, but nothing that’s going to make a difference at the highest levels.
Batters:
Primary Lineup vs. RHP and vs. LHP when Healthy (\DH enabled in both leagues, lineup vs. RHP shown below)*
CF – Wil Mireles
Mireles was brought in to provide gold glove defense in center field, and he did just that, winning his second straight award. He did well in the leadoff spot, but I have a couple of young guys that’ll probably force him lower in the order next year.
1B – Ernesto Bernal
I thought moving Bernal back to the two spot would get him back on track, but I’m starting to worry he’s just getting old and regressing. I’ll bring him back for the last year of his deal then see where we’re at after that.
DH – Jeff Hopper
Somehow, Hopper continues to improve. He made his third all-star team, won the batting crown for the second straight year, won the batter of the month in July, won his first platinum stick award, and finished third in the MVP voting. He’ll return for his last arbitration season then probably leave as a free agent.
LF – Bob Banks
Banks was everything I hoped for and more. He was a force in the middle of the lineup, hitting 52 homers and driving in 126 runs. He won rookie of the month in July and September, took the rookie of the year by unanimous vote, and finished fourth in the MVP voting.
2B – Edgar Sanchez
The 192-million-dollar man continues to be one of the best players in the game. He started the all-star game, won his sixth consecutive gold glove and his second straight platinum stick award. He looks well on his way to the hall of fame.
3B – Alexis Colon
Colon was a great two-year rental but will be leaving as a free agent. There’s no way I’m giving him the 8/$184m he wants to re-sign.
RF – Julio Guerra
Guerra spent about 50 games in the majors and was awful. I sent him back to AA to make room for my number one prospect. He might get another shot next year as a utility guy.
SS – Steve Flores
Flores doesn’t provide much offensively but he’s the best defensive short stop in the game. He won the gold glove there, which should be the first of many to come.
C – Drew Romo
Speaking of all defense no offense players, Romo went back to his usual ways at the plate after signing his big contract. I’m not mad though, he’s probably worth what I’m paying him.
Bench
C – Danny Wells
Wells is the right-handed version of Romo and will be back for a fourth season.
IF – Justus Evans
Evans is a legitimate talent that probably deserves a starting role, but he’ll have to wait until he plays elsewhere for that opportunity.
IF – Chris McClain
McClain is perfect in his role, so I see no reason not to bring him back.
OF – Edwin Mireles
Mireles is an all-star talent but can’t stay healthy. He’s trade bait.
Replacements
OF – Marco Vazquez
Vazquez was a revelation the last two-thirds of the year. He had to learn right field on the fly, but his offense was great the whole way through. He’ll have a starting role next year, I’m just not sure where yet. He can play almost anywhere.
OF – Andy Vera
Vera was called up during Edwin Mireles multiple IL stints and I decided to leave him up when Mireles returned the last time. He’s an above average defender at multiple positions and holds his own at the plate. He’ll have a role next season.
Pitchers:
Pitching Staff when Healthy
SP – Gilles Palacios
Palacios continues to add to his hall of fame resume, winning his third Cy Young and making his sixth all-star team. He’ll be back next season.
SP – Corey MacDonald
Speaking of hall of fame resumes, MacDonald continues to improve his chances with his fifth all-star appearance and a fifth place Cy Young finish. He has one more arbitration season, but I’ll probably try to lock him up long term.
SP – Andy Schaffer
Schaffer got back on track this year, posting his best season yet. He still hasn’t made an all-star team but finished second in the Cy Young voting.
SP – Eddie Copping
Copping’s ratings have come a long way since his major league debut in 2033 and he’d be the ace on a lot of other teams. As is, he’s our fourth best guy, but that was good enough for a fourth place Cy Young finish and a pitcher of the month award in June.
SP – Bobby Butler
We have an embarrassment of riches at the starting pitcher position, as Butler is another guy in the back of our rotation that would anchor a lot of other staffs. He had a great rookie year and will be back for a second season.
RP – Alan McCarter
The team prankster continues to churn out above average seasons. We have him for at least two more arbitration seasons, which he’ll definitely return for.
RP – Jose Macias
Macias didn’t get many opportunities this year and wasn’t very good in the ones he had. I’m betting there’s more to him than his performance showed though, so he’ll be back next year.
RP – Danny Ibarra
I’m not really sure what happened with Ibarra this season. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he took a visit to the Guru. He has an arbitration estimate of ~$4m next year, and I have an excess of lefty relievers, so there’s a good chance he doesn’t return.
RP – Mike Ruhs
Ruhs wasn’t terrible but I probably won’t bring him back due his age and upcoming free agent status.
RP – Joe McKinney
I’d love to have McKinney back next year, but not at the 4/$36m he’s requesting. I’ll let him enter free agency and see if I can get him at a better price.
RP – Tommy Noonan
Noonan had another dominant season, making his fourth all-star team and winning his third consecutive reliever of the year award. I’ll bring him back for his last arbitration season and hopefully work out a long-term extension next year.
RP – Jose Aguilar
Aguilar was mad as a hornet that I didn’t give him the closer role. Fortunately, we had enough talent around him to compensate for his substandard play, but we’ll have to re-evaluate his role with the team if he continues to play like this next season.
RP – Jonathan Kelsey
Kelsey is really good out of the bullpen and we have two more years of team control, so hopefully he accepts his fate as a reliever by then so he can continue to hang around.
Replacements
SP – Chris Larkin
Larkin was called up when rosters expanded and pitched well as the sixth starter. He’s a perfectly capable major league pitcher but I don’t have a place for him.
RP – Steve Hixson
I thought Hixson was an interesting piece but not interesting enough to protect him in the rule 5 draft, so the Expos picked him up. He played well for them, but they released him back anyways, allowing me to give him a shot with us when rosters expanded. He was really good in limited appearances and I think he’ll be a member of the bullpen next season.
Season Results:
The regular season has almost become a formality at this point. We curb stomped the competition en route to 115 wins and a run differential of +333, but it really doesn’t matter if we lose in the first round again.
Everyone other than Flores is healthy to start the offseason, but his injury is only a day-to-day and he’s available to play. We’re going with a playoff rotation of MacDonald, Palacios, Schaffer, and Copping. Butler will move to the bullpen.
Our first-round matchup is against the 102-60 Phillies, led by veterans Pete Alonso and Kyle Brnovich and rising stars Mike Alarcon and Jonathan Magee. They have one of the best offenses in baseball and a solid pitching staff, but we should come out on top if everything goes right.
Divisional Series Game 1, Slammers Win 7-1 – We started off the series great, getting 7.1 innings of one run ball from MacDonald and a strong showing from the offense. The veteran Bernal led the way with 3 RBIs.
Divisional Series Game 2, Phillies Win 6-2 – This one was close most of the way, but Palacios gave up a two-run shot in the seventh, then left the bases loaded in the eighth for Noonan to give up a grand slam. The offense couldn’t come through when it mattered and left nine on base.
Divisional Series Game 3, Slammers Win 6-5 (11) – Game three was back and forth throughout, with us coming through late. The rookie Vazquez had a run scoring single to tie it in the top of the ninth and Evans had a pinch hit go-ahead solo homer in the eleventh. Flores tacked on a sac-fly that gave us enough to hold on, as Ibarra allowed a run in the bottom of the eleventh before closing them out.
Divisional Series Game 4, Phillies Win 7-5 – Copping did enough to win but Aguilar and Ibarra gave up a combined three runs in the bottom of the eighth to blow the lead and put them ahead. Evans had 3 RBIs in the loss.
Divisional Series Game 5, Slammers Win 11-8 – This one wasn’t pretty but we won the shootout 11-8, with Hopper led the way on offense with 3 RBIs. We’re heading back home and just need to win one more to close out the series.
Divisional Series Game 6, Slammers Win 4-1 – Three time Cy Young award winner Palacios came through huge to close out the series. He gave up one run over eight innings and struck out ten. Banks led the way on offense with two home runs and four RBIs, taking series MVP.
We finally broke our first-round drought! Words can’t state my relief. I don’t care if I get swept next series, I just had to get out of the first round.
Up next is the 99-63 Rockies, led by ace pitcher Steve Delaney and our old friend Robby Teeter. This is a strength-on-strength matchup, as they have the best offense and us the best defense.
NLCS Game 1, Slammers Win 7-1 – We started off the NLCS with a bang, winning game one 7-1. Schaffer gave up one run over 6.1 innings and Banks led the way on offense with a two-run homer.
NLCS Game 2, Slammers Win 9-8 (15) – This one was a wild back and forth affair that was decided in the bottom of the fifteenth with a walk-off home run from Hopper. Everyone chipped in on offense, as no player had more than one RBI.
NLCS Game 3, Slammers Win 12-4 – The offense exploded with twelve runs, led by Banks with 4 RBIs. MacDonald pitched well, giving up two runs over six innings.
NLCS Game 4, Slammers Win 15-7 – I was worried about the Rockies offense at Coors, but it seems they should’ve been the ones worried about us. Banks, Colon, and Romo had 3 RBIs a piece in a dominant offensive performance, with Banks taking series MVP once again.
We’ll be playing the 89-73 Angels in the World Series and they’re led by another former Slammer, Fernando Tatis Jr. This looks to be the worst team we’ll face in the playoffs, so hopefully this is just a victory lap.
World Series Game 1, Slammers Win 4-3 (10) – This was a wild one, as the Angels lost on an error in the bottom of the tenth. We started off the inning with a single from Hopper, who then advanced to second on a wild pitch. He then attempted to steal third and a throwing error by the catcher allowed him to reach home and win the game. Tough loss for the Angels.
World Series Game 2, Slammers Win 4-3 – Copping pitched a gem, giving up one run over 7.2 innings. Aguilar and McCarter tried to lose the game, each giving up a run in the ninth, but we held on to win.
World Series Game 3, Angels Win 6-4 – The Angels bounced back and won game three, roughing up MacDonald along the way. Colon had three RBIs in the loss.
World Series Game 4, Angels Win 8-6 – We put our best on the mound for game four and it just wasn’t enough. Palacios, Noonan, and Aguilar gave up a combined eight runs over eight innings. We need to steal a win in game five.
World Series Game 5, Slammers Win 7-5 – We got the win we needed on the road and will look to close out the series when we head back home. Romo hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the ninth.
World Series Game 6, Slammers Win 2-1 – Copping had another stellar outing, striking out ten and giving up one run over 7.1 innings. Then Banks won the game and the series with a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the ninth. This makes three World Series in fifteen years, not too bad for an expansion team! Bernal won series MVP.
Here are the rest of the playoff results and MLB standings.
Top Prospects:
The farm system isn’t quite as loaded as last year, but that’s bound to happen when you promote three guys that perform like all-stars. We still have one of the best systems in baseball and should continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
1.) Bobby McCallum
McCallum has elite power potential to go along with above average fielding skills. He played great in A+ and will begin next season in AA. I anticipate him making the majors sooner than later, where him and Banks will form a deadly middle of the lineup duo.
2.) Chris Brown
Brown’s ratings have progressed nicely since last year, but I’ll probably give him another season in A+. Once his control rounds out, he’ll be ready for the majors.
3.) Eric Lawrence
Lawrence was an honorable mention last season, but his ratings progression and outstanding performance have landed him at number three this year. He’ll start next season in AAA and could force his way to the majors by the end of the season. It’ll be difficult to decide whether to play him or Sanchez at shortstop.
4.) Chris Dearborn
I’m out on Dearborn. I’ve seen way too many pitchers with his profile flame out, so I’m going to cash out on him while his value is still high. Maybe he’ll be great elsewhere, but I’m willing to take that risk.
5.) Alex Rivera
The odds of Rivera getting a starting middle infield spot seem to get worse by the day. He was previously number three in line, behind Sanchez and Flores, but I’d say Lawrence is now ahead of him too. Depending on what the rest of the roster looks like, I might give him a shot at third base next season.
6.) Dan McIver
McIver would be much lower on this list if not for his character and baserunning skills. Good hitters that don’t play defense are a dime a dozen, but McIver might get a DH role due to everything else he provides.
7.) Chris Overcash
Overcash was one of my three drafted players this season with an “impossible” signing bonus demand, but I think he’ll be worth it. He’s above average defensively and has the potential to be an elite hitter. As long as he stays healthy, I like his chances of reaching the majors.
8.) Felix Lopez
None of Lopez’s skills jump off the page, but he has great character, durable injury proneness, and performed really well in rookie ball. I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes an above average major league starter. He’ll begin next season in A-.
9.) Jake Maddox
Relievers aren’t the sexiest prospects, but there’s nothing wrong with a guy that could give you 2-3 WAR per year for ten seasons. Maddox played well in rookie ball and will begin next season in A.
10.) Jose Gutierrez
Gutierrez’s offensive potential appears to have stalled out since last year but I’m not giving up on him yet. He’s still very young and his high character gives him a good shot of improving.
Honorable mentions:
Ian Carroll
Carroll is a great talent but can’t stay healthy. I’ll look to trade him as soon as I can.
Hector Ruiz
I won’t say anything about Ruiz until he’s played a year of rookie ball.
Art Baker, Bobby Bockman
We have a lot of solid catching prospects in the system, but I wish I could consolidate them into one elite guy. That’s easier said than done though, as great two-way catchers are harder to find than a shiny Chansey.
Mike Dooner, Abel Gallagher
These guys are nice minor league pieces, but like I said earlier, good hitters that don’t play defense are a dime a dozen. They’ll probably either get traded or end up blocked in the high minors.
Nate Bianco
I’ve never had a great six-pitch pitcher, so I get excited any time I see a guy that has a shot of becoming one. Bianco played well in rookie ball and will begin next season in A-.
Joe Poffenberger
Poffenberger looks ready for the majors but I prefer Romo’s skillset, so he’ll start next year at AAA.
Promoted to MLB:
Marco Vazquez, Rob Banks, Andy Vera, Chris Larkin
Future Outlook:
Money is getting tight, but I think I can work some magic and bring back most of the team. The season after next, we’ll have to do some re-tooling though, as Bernal and Hopper will be entering free agency. As long as the young guys like Banks and Vazquez continue to improve, and a couple of new talents emerge, we should be fine though.
As far as future goals, I’m still hoping to get some of “my guys” into the hall of fame, but I’d also like to put together a string of championships and have a 120+ win season. We definitely have the talent to repeat next year.
Fan loyalty increased to “great” at the end of the season. This is “great” news!
Here is the budget and salaries heading into the offseason.
