OSAC encourages travelers to use this report to gain baseline knowledge of security conditions in Honduras. That’s mainly to visit islands like Roatan. The government of Honduras is committed to attracting more tourists. By 2020 they want an additional million tourists annually. Chances are, if you are arriving via a cruise ship, you will be safe. Traveling around the country is a more complicated matter. Honduras is one of the murder capitals of The Honduras mainland and Roatan don’t have the same crime stats. Most importantly I am always amazed at my fellow Americans always inquiring about safety in foreign destinations when we live in the most dangerous country in the world. Roatan is now open for visitors after Honduras officially reopened its airports for international flights on August 17th, 2020. The country’s borders were closed on March 15th, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Roatan resorts have looked forward to welcoming visitors back after being shut down for over five months. Roatan is a beautiful island about 40 miles off the coast of Honduras. And while Roatan’s safety rating is lumped in with mainland Honduras, Roatan is separate in geography, culture, and safety. While no separate safety or crime statistics are kept for Roatan, an abundance of evidence strongly suggests that Roatan is a world apart from its Reconsider travel to Honduras due to COVID-19 and crime.Some areas have increased risk.
